Words Alive has selected 12 students from six San Diego County Juvenile Court and Community Schools as the 2012-2013 Words Alive Westreich Scholarship recipients. The awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 for the 2012-2013 academic year. The funds are not restricted to books, tuition and educational supplies and can be used for other expenses related to schooling. Additionally, each recipient is matched with a mentor to provide guidance and direction. Words Alive inspires a commitment to reading and develops shared reading experiences for youth and adults … Solutions for Change held a ribbon cutting ceremony to open an aquaponic farm which strives to end family homelessness in North County. Solutions Farms is San Diego’s largest aquaponic farm facility. The goal is to grow 86,000 pounds of produce and raise 13,000 pounds of fish in its first year. Bumble Bee Foods president and CEO, Chris Lischewski, has committed sponsorships funds on behalf of Bumble Bee to provide startup capital for the farm project … Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Foundation awarded scholarships for the 2012-2013 school year to six North County students interested in pursuing careers in the health care field. Leonard Polster brought the organizations together to form the scholarship program which is now in its ninth year … The University of San Diego held its fourth annual Wine Classic raising $50,000 for student scholarships. Lead sponsors included Bartell Hotels and 101 Things to Do San Diego … Outdoor Outreach received a $10,000 grant from Ashford University to support its afterschool Adventure Club at Lincoln High School in southeast San Diego. Outdoor Outreach is an agency in San Diego that utilizes outdoor physical experiences combined with academic and social support to provide youth with the support, relationships, resources and opportunities they need to become successful adults … A press conference was held in front of the Chula Vista Fire Department to announce that American Medical Response is donating an ambulance to the American Red Cross in Mexico. “We thank AMR and look forward to more public/private partnerships in the future,” said Councilman Rudy Ramirez … J. H. Cohn has been recognized as one of the ten “Best Accounting Firms for Women” by the American Society of Women Accountants and the American Woman’s Society of Certified Public Accountants for the second consecutive year. Firms were ranked on the range, depth, and success of programs and workplace culture proven to remove barriers to women’s success, especially at midlevel and higher positions … Volunteers from Nokia’s San Diego location worked on four new homes in Imperial Beach, a project that Habitat for Humanity broke ground on in April. The homes will be sold to low-income families who will contribute to the building of the homes, and who will repay an interest free mortgage. “A major goal of Nokia is to enable people everywhere to get more of life’s opportunities through mobile,” said Jari Niemela, vice president of product engineering. In addition to the volunteer work of the employees, Nokia also donated $10,000 to help purchase building materials to ensure the completion of the new homes … Shasta Landscaping was awarded the President’s Award by the California Landscape Contractors Association San Diego Chapter for its green roof project at the Charles David Keeling Apartments at UC San Diego. Shasta also received honors from the CLCA San Diego for work at the Origen Model homes in Mission Valley … Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside raised $26,000 at its annual golf tournament, at Arrowood Golf Course. Erickson-Hall Construction sponsored the tournament. Proceeds benefit the after school and summer programs for the 1,200 youth served daily.
