The YWCA 2012 “In the Company of Women” luncheon is being held at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina. This year the YWCA combined their two signature events into one with Ashley Judd as the keynote speaker. Judd is an acclaimed actor, humanitarian, and a woman who has devoted much of her life to carrying the message of empowerment and equality. The April 16 event will not only raise awareness about domestic violence, homelessness, and the YWCA programs, but will also feature an awards presentation, honoring three outstanding female professionals with three Tribute to Women & Industry awards, The TWIN Mentor Award, The Twin Humanitarian Award and The TWIN Visionary Award. All proceeds go to fund YWCA programs and services for survivors of domestic violence and homelessness, including Becky’s House, Passages and the Cortez Hill Family Center … The UC San Diego Chancellor’s Associates recognition ceremony and reception was held at Atkinson Hall. Six professors have been honored with Chancellor’s Associates Faculty Excellence Awards for excellence in teaching, research, community service and performing and visual arts. The recipients include: Alan Houston, William Kristan, Laura Schreibman, James Kadonaga, Michael Kalichman and Steven Schick. Each recipient received a citation and a $2,500 award. “This year’s honorees exemplify our tradition of excellence and innovation,” said Chancellor Marye Anne Fox … The third annual Kia Classic Ladies Professional Golf Association golf tournament was held at La Costa Resort. Kia Motors America and LPGA winner Michelle Wie paired up to donate $50,000 to Operation Hero, one of the programs of the Camp Pendleton Armed Services YMCA. The funds help Operation Hero maintain staff and provide equipment and supplies to students at Camp Pendleton. Gold sponsors included Sycuan Golf & Tennis Resort, Gilbert Martin Foundation and Sutherland Management Co. … The San Diego Rescue Mission held its annual Easter meal on March 31. “This year the Easter meal was more significant since there has been an 8.6 percent increase in homelessness in the San Diego County this year alone,” said Rescue Mission CEO and President Herb Johnson. The Mission fed 1,000 people at this year’s dinner … San Diego Coastkeeper hosted its 5th Annual Walk the Watershed event at Otay Valley Regional Park. The walk began at Otay Valley Regional Park at Finney Elementary. The purpose is to help residents across the county understand that what they do inland can affect the health of the bays and ocean. Port of San Diego, WiLDCOAST, Elementary Institute of Science, Allied Waste, City of Chula Vista, Otay Valley Regional Park, Parks and Recreation County of San Diego, REI and I Love a Clean San Diego all partnered with Coastkeeper to make the event a success … The Liberty Tax Service office in North Park was set to hold a food drive for Mama’s Pantry. Mama’s Pantry, a service of Mama’s Kitchen, serves San Diego County residents who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. Clients shop monthly at no cost and receive up to 25 perishable and nonperishable food items … Echo Pacific Construction participated with Lucky Stores of San Ysdiro in the San Ysdiro School District Families First Project. Echo Pacific team members and district administrators delivered packages with provisions for the Easter holiday to eligible households. Gift baskets consisting of food to prepare a complete Easter holiday dinner to insure a healthy, happy holiday were delivered to seventy families. Project Families First was established as a model program to eliminate barriers to education. The San Ysdiro School District Families First Project was formed 7 years ago to help meet the challenges of promoting the educational success of children who are experiencing homelessness.
