Foundation Is Employing Its Resources for Workforce Development

The Escondido Charitable Foundation granted $90,000 to local organizations that focus on workforce development. The YMCA of San Diego County, North County Serenity House and Escondido Education COMPACT all received $25,000 and the Interfaith Community Services received $15,000. To date, ECF has raised $1 million in contributions and commitments for the benefit of Escondido. This year marks the launch of Live Here, Give Here: McLaughlin Matching Gift Program to promote and grow charitable giving in San Diego’s North County communities … Watkins Manufacturing, located in Vista, produced its millionth hot tub in October. To celebrate the occasion, the company held an online auction among Hot Spring Spas retailers for the right to own the tub. The company also pledged to match the dealer’s winning bid. The result was a $34,400 donation to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The donation will help support the foundation’s mission to provide services and assistance to the families of firefighters who died in the line of duty … PCL Construction donated $10,000 to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank to support those in need. The San Diego Food Bank distributes over 18 million pounds of food annually to individuals, families and a network of nonprofit organizations … Susan G. Komen for the Cure, San Diego received $62,250 from the 24-hour Survivor Crop for the Cure Scrapbooking Marathon. The event brought together scrapbook fans with a common interest in helping SGK in its mission to eradicate breast cancer. Survivor Crop has raised $400,000 for the San Diego affiliate over the past 10 years … On Oct. 22, the Jack in the Box Foundation held its annual bowl-a-thon at El Cajon’s Parkway Bowl raising $20,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County. The funds will support the Operation Bigs program, which provides mentors, primarily from the military to kids whose parents are deployed overseas … The 7th annual “Chef Showdown: Taking a Stand Against Domestic Violence” fundraiser was held Oct. 6 at the NTC Promenade. The event raised $126,000 to support the programs of the Center for Community Solutions which include sexual assault and domestic violence prevention and intervention services. The event was sponsored by Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, Cups, ProFlowers, Nordstrom and Mintz Levin … Martin Brown, chief business officer of Elcelyx Therapeutics has issued a $100,000 challenge grant for the Equinox Center. The Brown Family Fund will match any contribution of $100,000 to Equinox Center over three years. The Center helps the San Diego region manage growth while achieving a more prosperous economy, healthy environment and outstanding quality of life for all residents … The Junior Seau Foundation raised $130,000 at its 11th annual Teammates Luncheon held Oct. 31. Tony Hawk was honored for his accomplishments in skateboarding and his dedication to supporting public skateboard parks. Organizations receiving funding were the Tony Hawk Foundation and Vista Skatepark Coalition each receiving $10,000; ProKids received $4,000 and additional proceeds benefited the foundation’s Scholars of Excellence, Shop With A Jock, Thanksgiving at Seau’s The Restaurant. Major sponsors were Edco, Dowling & Yahnke, American Airlines and San Diego County Toyota Dealers … The YWCA’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event was held Oct. 20 raising $70,000 for Becky’s House domestic violence program. All of the services provided by Becky’s House support the individual’s journey from victim to survivor to achiever, serving 3,000 women and children each year … The American Heart Association awarded its Population Research Prize for 2011 to Elizabeth Barrett-Connor, professor and chief of the division of Epidemiology at UC San Diego. Barrett-Connor is founding director of the Rancho Bernardo Heart and Chronic Disease Study, now in its 40th year.
