The Inamori Foundation and Kyoto Symposium Organization’s gala is set for April 4 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. The gala benefit in honor of the Kyoto Prize laureates is kicking off the opening of the Kyoto Prize Symposium. The presenting sponsor is Union Bank and title sponsors are Farrell Family Foundation, Joan and Irwin Jacobs Fund and the Jewish Community Foundation, Qualcomm and Kyocera. Proceeds from the symposium’s gala will fund this year’s Kyoto Scholarships … The San Diego Police Foundation presented Women in Blue on March 9 at Donovan’s Circle of 5ths. Those recognized were District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis; Rana Sampson, San Diego’s first lady; and San Diego Police Department Assistant Chief Shelley Zimmerman. Proceeds raised go to support the San Diego Police Foundation to fund specialized equipment, training and cooperative community programs … San Diego History Center was set to hold its History Maker of the Year for 2011 on March 26 at the Town & Country Resort and Conference Center. Sol Price was honored posthumously for the contributions he made to the retail industry as well as his philanthropic contributions to San Diego. Price founded FedMart Stores in 1954 and Price Club in 1976. Proceeds from the event will benefit the History Center’s research, collections, educational programs, exhibitions and public outreach efforts … The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Foundation hosted a testimonial dinner honoring Monty Woolley on March 2 at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. Woolley was recognized for his leadership and contributions to the youth of the community. The event raised $33,000, which will benefit the B&GCSD Foundation … Second Chance received a donation of discontinued Sycuan Casino uniforms valued at $33,000 from the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation for graduates to assure that they would have the proper clothing as they embark on job searches. In addition, each graduate of the Work Readiness Program class received a canvas bag filled with personal supplies. Union Bank presented Second Chance with a $25,000 check, which is the last of a three-year commitment in support of this program. The Work Readiness Program graduates 500 individuals each year and is funded by contributions such as the gift from Union Bank … The Junior Seau Foundation honored Bill Walton as the 2011 Legend of the Year at the 19th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic. The dinner was held March 20 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine where Walton was presented the award and recognized for his accomplishments on the basketball court as well as in the community. He became a two-time NBA Champion and is a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. Sponsors of the three-day Celebrity Golf Classic include EDCO, Dowling &Yahnke, Bloom Fresh Flowers, Mercedes-Benz of Escondido, Nordstrom, Wells Fargo and San Diego County Toyota Dealers … Roberto Cortez, a senior at Monarch School, was selected as one of 21 students to attend the WWE WrestleMania competition in Atlanta. In the program sponsored by WWE and the Young Adult Library Association, students pledged to read five books between October and April and create a story or illustration involving their favorite wrestler and literary character. Cortez also won $2,000 to go toward the purchase of reading materials for Monarch School’s library, as well as a set of books donated by Penguin Publishers … Men Against Breast Cancer is set to honor Phil and Amy Mickelson at the 8th Think Pink & Blue Fashion Event on April 8 at Neiman Marcus. The Mickelsons will receive the Gloria Heyison Inspiration Award, named after founder Marc Heyison’s mother, a breast cancer survivor since 1992. The Mickelsons are being honored for their commitment to improving the quality of life of patients and their families and serving as role models for how to face and navigate the crisis of breast cancer.
