The Jewish Community Foundation San Diego reported a 67 percent increase to its donor advised funds and family foundations for 2010. The gifts will help fund grants. JCF received $55 million in contributions during the second half of the year. During fiscal year 2009-10, the JCF awarded and facilitated $68 million on 5,000 grants to 1,500 organizations. “These numbers indicate that it is a priority for our donors to continue to give often and generously to the thousands of deserving organizations and causes they support,” said Marjory Kaplan, president and chief executive officer … Meals-on-Wheels received a $40,000 grant from LPL Financial to help fund an internship program. The LPL Financial Internship for Nutritional Studies is a new program offered via MoW University to expose health care workers and caregivers to a senior population that is independent and still living in their own homes … The Grossmont Healthcare District donated $150,000 to Volunteers in Medicine — San Diego, an organization that brings together medical professionals and patients who don’t have health insurance. The money will be used to pay for diagnostic lab fees and medical supplies for uninsured East County residents who are treated at the VIM El Cajon medical clinic … Five Pacific Ridge School students were recognized at the 2011 Model United Nations Conference of the University of Chicago. The Conference, held in Chicago from Feb. 3 to 6, brings to life the problems that face the real world. It allows participants to represent their assigned country’s position and work toward resolving issues of global importance … The ARC of San Diego received a $2,000 CVS Caremark Community Grant. The funds will go to the parent/infant program, which provides family-centered early educational services for children from birth to 3 years old with developmental delays … The Top Chef Korean Food Challenge awards were presented to Bernard Guillas and Ron Oliver from The Marine Room at the San Diego Wine & Culinary Center on Feb. 10. Prizes included round-trip tickets to Korea sponsored by Asiana Airlines and a cash prize of $1,000 … Dr. Charles von Gunten received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Von Gunten is provost at San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine in San Diego. “The growing prominence in the field of palliative medicine can be directly tied to Dr. von Gunten’s years of work and expertise in this specialty area of medicine,” said Kathleen Pacurar, president and CEO of San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine … The Napa Auto Repair Centers of San Diego have repaired, serviced and donated a vehicle to a family involved with the YWCA’s Becky’s House. The donation provided transportation to a family that would otherwise not have a vehicle. It was led by John’s Automotive Care, a NAPA Auto Repair Center. Additional donations were provided by Carrillo’s Auto Body and Summit Transmissions and Farmers Insurance. The family who won the auto was chosen in a lottery from all of the families at both of the Becky’s Houses … Brothers Jim and Tom Baird contributed to the renovation of The La Costa Clubhouse, the Village Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. With a donation from Dunn-Edwards and the help of friends of Jim Baird, the Clubhouse received a face-lift. Tom Baird, who works at Nissho of California, recruited his crew for bi-weekly landscaping services to provide grounds upkeep. The brothers wanted to give back to the club where they spent time as kids … The San Diego Foundation awarded grants totaling $100,800 as part of the Arts & Culture Working Group. Cygnet Theatre, Escondido History Center, The Old Globe and Playwrights Project each received $25,000 and ArtsReady San Diego received $800.
