Richard C. Atkinson will receive the Scientist of the Year. ARCS is dedicated to advancing science and technology by providing financial awards to academically outstanding citizens for education … Suzanne Stewart Pohlman, executive director of Interfaith Community Services, was honored with the 2011 Starfish Leadership Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award was to be presented at the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Business Awards on Mar. 4 at Park Hyatt Aviara Resort. Pohlman is retiring this year after 29 years with ICS as its founder and leader … The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of San Diego raised $421,000 at the 12th Annual Light the Night Walk which was held on Nov. 5. The Top Fundraising Corporate Team honors went to Celgene and second place went to UCSD/Sharp BMT Program. Event sponsors included Bristol-Myers Squibb, Celgene, Cephalon Oncology and Genentech/Biogen Idec. Proceeds go to fund research for blood cancers … The Hotel del Coronado partnered with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure San Diego to present Eat, Pray, Spa held on Feb. 22 to honor 12 breast cancer survivors who were top fundraisers in 2010. They were given an evening of pampering at the Hotel Del spa. According to Laura Farmer Sherman, founding executive director of Komen, “Seventy-five percent of the funds raised go to support breast health services for uninsured and underinsured individuals.”… Takeda San Diego employees engaged in community service on Feb. 18. They chose to participate in one of three options: planting native cottonwood and willow trees in the river habitat at Mast Park in Santee; biking in the Tour de Takeda challenge at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve to raise money for the American Diabetes Association; or giving blood at local donation centers. “We are dedicated to making a difference in the San Diego community, and we often organize companywide efforts to help local nonprofit organizations,” said Keith Wilson, president of TSD … Priscilla Elizalde, a graduate of Kearny High School’s Construction Tech Academy, won the first National Sun Life Rising Star Award. This year’s event raised $34,000 to support animal welfare and animal adoption … Jewish Family Service is presenting the Heart & Soul Gala 2011 on Mar. 12 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. The 2011 Mitzvah Award Honorees are: Esther and Bud Fischer for their contribution to the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry to increase distribution at Camp Pendleton and Murphy Canyon Military Housing; Robert Rubenstein for establishing the Rubenstein Family Scholarship for recent high school graduates planning to attend college or vocational school; and Rebecca McInnis for volunteering with the JFS Embrace-A-Family program which matches families in need with those willing to give.
