Armon Mills and Kay Coleman were honorary co-chairs of the San Diego Invitational Golf Tournament which was held on May 23 at The Santaluz Club. The event, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, raised $145,000 to support research, programs and services for cancer patients and their families in San Diego. Robert Brewer, an attorney with Jones Day, a member of the ACS Partnership Council and a cancer survivor, was the honoree. He was recognized for his longtime dedication to the fight against cancer. The associate sponsors of the tournament were Celgene and Wells Fargo. Del Mar Venture Group was the executive sponsor. Other sponsors included The Corky McMillin Cos., Bank of America, BH Gold Insurance, Allied Waste, Biocom, J.H.Cohn and Roth Capital Partners … Makua’s 58th annual fundraising event was held on May 21 at Humphrey’s by the Bay on Shelter Island. Sponsors for the evening included North American Communications, Bank of the West, Island Prime & C Level, Ruff Haus Design, Allstar Group and BeaterBlade. Makua celebrated the landmark achievement of raising $1 million in support of Voices for Children since 2004. VFC provides advocacy and mentoring services to foster children through court appointed special advocates … Marvin Gilbert of North County Insurance, Escondido, received the 2011 Business Leader of the Year Award from the Escondido Chamber of Commerce. The award was presented at the 101st Installation and Awards Dinner on June 10 at the Pala Casino Resort & Spa. Gilbert is a past chairman of the chamber, a member of the Chairman’s Circle and a member of the Escondido Union School District Board of Education … Associates of California Bank & Trust in the San Diego area raised $35,000 for City of Hope’s Walk for Hope campaign which was held on May 21 at Point Loma Nazarene University. Funds raised will be used for research and treatment for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases … Feeding America San Diego received 91,000 pounds of food from their nine partner post offices from the Stamp Out Hunger food drive. This amount is equivalent of 73,000 meals … The 20th Anniversary Spinoff: Auction for Life, Wonders of the World, was held on May 5 raising $1.6 million to support cancer programs and patient support services at Scripps Cancer Center, Stevens Division … BIA Cares held its second annual golf-a-thon on April 29 in partnership with Pro Kids learning center in Oceanside. The $30,000 raised will be used to construct a second Pro Kids facility … The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Foundation awarded $25,000 in college scholarships to 21 students at a dinner hosted by Leonard Polster at the Del Mar Hilton on May 19. Polster was also the donor of the scholarships. An additional $14,000 in scholarships will go to students who plan to enter the health care field. Scripps Health Foundation provides a matching grant with B&GCSD for these funds … UC San Diego honored outstanding community leaders and campus supporters who have been selected to receive Chancellor’s Medals. The 2011 recipients are Richard and Rita Atkinson, John and Ann Davies, Sheldon and Susan Engelhorn, Anne Ratner, and L.S. and Aline Skaggs. “I am delighted to honor these remarkable visionaries, who are truly citizens of the highest order, with Chancellor’s Medals,” said Chancellor Marye Anne Fox.
