The San Diego Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation raised $750,000 at its annual Promise Ball held on April 30 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Sponsors included Qualcomm, Chicago Title Commercial Services, the Polatchek Family and Dexcom. Funds raised will go to type 1 diabetes research at institutions such as UC San Diego’s Pediatric Diabetes Research Center, the Salk Institute and the La Jolla Institute of Allergy & Immunology. A special award was presented to David Winkler, former owner of the Del Mar Plaza, for his dedication to finding a cure for diabetes. Winkler has been a longtime community advocate for diabetes research … BIA Cares awarded Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America Camp $6,000 to send children suffering from Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis to camp. The Boys & Girls Club of Vista was awarded $2,500 for construction costs to build 50 storage cubbies. Max’s Ring of Fire was awarded $1,500 to sponsor the “Touch-a-Truck” car show to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research … Two San Diego charities received $25,000 grants in the latest round of the Chase Community Giving program. The San Diego Community Housing Corp. and Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School will advance to round 2 of the Chase program and have a chance to receive a $500,000 grant from the bank. “We are delighted that Chase will make a contribution to each of these worthy causes, said Kimberly Davis, president of the JPMorgan Chase Foundation … Malashock Dance received two national grants for their Academics in Motion program. The National Endowment for the Arts’ $10,000 grant was one of only 10 given. The VSA- Metlife Foundation, an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, is providing a $15,000 grant that along with the NEA grant will support the upcoming fifth year of work Malashock Dance will do with Spring Valley’s Freese Elementary Arts and Culture Magnet … The Chula Vista Nature Center received a $20,000 grant from The Goodrich Foundation to help fund construction of an outdoor classroom and Discovery Park. “We’re pleased to be part of this effort to strengthen the center’s ability to connect people of all ages, especially students, with nature,” said Roger Ross, vice president, Regional and Engine Programs for Goodrich Aerostructures … The YWCA’s In the Company of Women, held on April 20, raised $100,000 which will go to support the programs and services of the YWCA that help women, children and families break the cycle of domestic violence and homelessness in San Diego County. Cox Communications was the Gold Circle Sponsor of the event … The Walk to End Alzheimer’s was held on April 30 at the Silver Strand State Beach. The event raised $30,000 to aid the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter … In honor of The Salvation Army Week in San Diego, the week of May 11, Jerome’s Furniture donated furniture and beds to be used at the Army’s Door of Hope. An apartment for homeless families, the Door of Hope suffered flood damage and needed to be completely redone. When Jerry Navarra learned of this need, he donated $4,000 in furnishings to redo the apartment. “The Door of Hope lives up to its name for hundreds of women and children in San Diego,” said Navarra … Fresh Start Surgical Gifts received a grant of $13,000 from Procter & Gamble to help fund one surgery weekend. Fresh Start provides reconstructive surgery to disadvantaged infants, children and teens with physical deformities … The 3rd Annual Roll Out The Barrel Food and Wine Fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation was held on May 14 at Humphrey’s Concerts By the Bay. The event raised $95,000 for the programs that assist children battling life-threatening illnesses … In celebration of Memorial Day, Union Bank donated 1,500 San Diego Padres tickets to local military men and women and their families. They were to attend the Padres vs. Astros game on June 4, with Union Bank executive Pierre Habis throwing out the first pitch.
