BBVA Compass opened its La Jolla office on June 15. To mark the office opening, the BBVA Compass Foundation donated $125,000 to the San Diego Zoo. The zoo will receive $25,000 for its Education Outreach program. This will enable it to expand its current Zoo outreach program to 22,750 students and others along with 520 teachers. The rest of the grant will be paid out over three years to support a long-term partnership between BBVA and the zoo to help with the zoo’s commitment to protecting, exhibiting and breeding Sumatran tigers for the survival of the species … Art Pulse (formerly San Diego Fine Arts Society) received a $7,500 grant from the California Arts Council to help further Art Pulse’s mission of promoting arts and encouraging the younger generation to develop an appreciation of the arts … The Westreich Foundation contributed $300,000 to the San Diego Hospice and the Institute of Palliative Medicine. The funds will support the expansion of the Integrative Palliative Medicine program for patients and their families. “Integrative medicine has emerged as a potential solution to the American health care crisis,” said Ruth Westreich, president and founder of The Westreich Foundation … The March of Dimes San Diego-Imperial Division held its annual March for Babies on April 30. The event raised $650,000 for research, education, advocacy and community services in San Diego. Sponsors of the event held in Balboa Park were Sony Electronics, Jack in the Box, Farmers Insurance and FedEx … UC San Diego received a $2.4 million grant from the Hellman Fellows Fund. The gift supports the Hellman Fellows program which was founded by Chris and Warren Hellman in 1994 to help junior faculty establish a body of scholarly work that positions them for university tenure … The San Diego Futures Foundation received a $300,000 grant from the Gary and Mary West Foundation. The funds will provide job development services to low-income youth so they can obtain skills needed to pursue careers in the IT field. The program prepares youth for entry-level jobs such as computer and network technicians … The American Heart Association held its 2011 San Diego Heart Beach Ball on June 11 at the Hotel del Coronado. The event raised $260,000 for research in cardiovascular diseases and strokes. Barney & Barney was a sponsor along with Torrey Pines Bank, UBS, Clark Cares Foundation and UC San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center … Brittan Trozzi, a 2001 graduate of UCSD received a UC Alumni “Change the World” Scholarship from UCSD Extension to pursue graphic design studies in order to assist nonprofit organizations. The scholarship is awarded to graduates who demonstrate outstanding promise and potential … The Manchester Grand Hyatt hosted the Mama’s Kitchen Volunteers Appreciation Dinner on June 14. Chefs from Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, Hyatt Regency Mission Bay and Andaz participated along with GLBT to help overcome a summer shortage of food donations for Mama’s Kitchen to feed San Diegans affected by AIDS and other diseases. Eight bins of food were collected by Hyatt employees … Rady Children’s Hospital Miracle Makers Gala was held on June 11 at Hilton Bayfront Hotel. The $80,000 raised that night in addition to the $10.1 million raised over the past year are being used to treat the sick and injured children who seek treatment each year at Rady’s Children Hospital-San Diego … Rick Ludwig, sector lead executive at Northrop Grumman Corp.’s Aerospace System’s Unmanned Systems Development Center was honored by the Citizen Diplomacy Council of San Diego for his commitment to international peace and understanding. Under the auspices of the State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program, Ludwig has conferred with visitors from 56 countries during their stays in San Diego.
