Esther Burnham is being honored by San Diego Opera at its 2011 Gala scheduled for Jan. 29 at The US Grant hotel following a performance by the opera. Burnham, an investor, has been a dedicated supporter of the opera as well as other community organizations since 1973. She is a past commissioner of the City of San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture, the UC San Diego Board of Overseers and Chancellor’s Associates, San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Center for Children and the San Diego Foundation. She currently serves on the board of the Neurosciences Institute and is a Life Director of San Diego Opera. Just in Time for Foster Youth, Dress for Success and Supportive Parents Information Network will receive a share of the funding over a period of two years. “The impact of our granting to these organizations will be felt far and wide. They will not only improve the lives of women and girls in our community, but will also give them the ability to help their families,” said Jan Tuttleman, founding president … Center for Community Solutions was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Avon Foundation for Women. The grant supports the creation and funding of the Avon Empowerment Self-Sufficiency Program. CCS will use the funding to hire a full-time specialist to provide services to victims of domestic violence currently receiving emergency services at the CCS East County Family Justice Center … Rotary Club of San Diego raised $51,000 at its annual auction held in December. The funds raised will be added to the Diana Venable Scholarship Fund that now has $300,000 which is used to support low-income individuals seeking to obtain a university degree. Scholarship recipients are required to attend one of San Diego County’s community colleges for the first two years, and complete their degree requirements at San Diego State University … To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Mission Federal Credit Union, a “Kindness Crew” was created to appear at various schools, nonprofits, and events to carry out a Mission Act of Kindness with a “50th theme.” Monarch School was the site of the kickoff on Jan. 5 where 50 new books and 50 hand-held calculators were donated to its library to promote reading literacy and financial literacy. In addition, a $500 Mission to Succeed Scholarship was donated for Monarch to award to a deserving student this year.
