— Navy Squadron VR-57 at Naval Air Station North Island hosted “Wish Kids” from all regions of San Diego for a private “Top Gun” tour of military aircraft static displays. Benjamin Lou was one of 15 Wish Kids to take a tour, have lunch in the hangar and visit with Santa. The Make-A-Wish Foundation received $78,000 in support from the Combined Federal Campaign, the workplace giving program for federal employees, including members of the U.S. Navy in San Diego. The “Season of Wishes” campaign ran through Dec. 31, raising awareness and accepting donations to grant wishes for San Diego children faced with life-threatening medical conditions … Four San Diego organizations received grants from the Local Initiatives Support Corp. to open and expand Financial Opportunity Centers designed to help low- and moderate-income families achieve financial stability. The grant winners were: International Rescue Committee, $135,000; San Diego Housing Commission, $135,000; North County Lifeline, $135,000; and HomeStart, $100,000. The Financial Opportunity Centers bundle financial counseling, employment placement and career advancement services to help working families increase their incomes and raise their standards of living … Feeding America San Diego won a 2010 Victory Against Hunger Award sponsored by the Congressional Hunger Center, Victory Wholesale Group and Feeding America. FASD’s Mobile Food Pantry, sponsored by Ralphs, was recognized as an outstanding innovative, anti-hunger initiative that assists families in the community. They received a $1,000 grant to help fund the Mobile Food Pantry along with the award … Lincoln Military Housing and Operation Homefront hosted the annual “Our Gift to You Event” to express appreciation for military families. The event, held Dec. 11, benefited 700 military families and 1,500 children. They received food items, a $20 gift card and toys for children … The 24th annual San Diego Armed Services YMCA’s Super Parent Shopping Day was held Dec. 15. Enlisted military families were given the opportunity to shop for new toys in a store format with a personal shopper as part of Military Appreciation … BAE Systems employees donated 650 bicycles and helmets to the USO San Diego. A ceremony was held Dec. 14 at the Rancho Bernardo facility of BAE Systems. The bicycles and helmets are distributed by the USO to military families for nine local commands … Metropolitan Transit System and San Diego Food Bank held the annual “Stuff the Bus” food drive at San Diego Armed Services YMCA on Dec. 7 to benefit military families who are struggling due to difficult economic conditions … Feeding America San Diego donated 20,000 pounds of diapers as part of a partnership with Huggies Every Little Bottom campaign. On Dec. 17, FASD donated 2,100 cases of diapers to local partner agencies such as Jewish Family Service and Casa de Amparo … Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad received a $14,000 donation from Air Products to buy new computers for the Village Clubhouse. Air Products makes semiconductor materials and other computer equipment. The company felt it appropriate that its donation be used to upgrade the club’s computer lab which is where members go for after-school programs, to do homework and learn other computer skills … Employees of Cavignac & Associates raised $12,600 as part of the company’s “Charity Fund” employee gift-giving program. Among those receiving funds were Toussaint Academy of the Arts and Sciences, the San Diego Junior Theatre’s scholarship program, Voices for Children and Monarch School … Cox Communications is offering $55,000 in college scholarships to San Diego-area students through its Cox Scholars program presented by Mission Federal Credit Union. The scholarships in denominations of $2,500 or $10,000 are available through the Cox Kids Foundation.
