University of San Diego to Rename Center to Honor Benefactor

The University of San Diego received a $3 million gift from the estate of USD friend and benefactor Frances G. Harpst. In honor of this gift, the university will rename the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture to include her name. Harpst, who was a longtime Coronado resident, was a spiritual and admired supporter of Catholic projects and initiatives. She has supported several university projects, including the Monsignor Portman Chair in Roman Catholic Theology; the Monsignor I.B. Eagan Plaza and Choral Scholars Endowment Fund … Barrio Logan College Institute received a $100,000 donation from a couple who chose to fund the program’s scholastic mission for underrepresented children. Keith Behner and Catherine Stiefel, retirees and graduates of San Diego State University, spend their time researching charitable causes and chose BLCI after attending a November open house at the institute and were inspired by stories of the students in the program … The San Diego chapter of Childhelp held its 24th Annual Holiday Fantasia on Nov. 19 at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad. Don and Beth Bewley of Eufora International were presented the “For the Love of A Child” award for their work with abused and neglected children.
