The La Jolla Playhouse 2011 gala scheduled for March 19 will honor Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright along with Tony Award-winning actor BD Wong and set designer Robert Brill. In keeping with the theme, “La Jolla Playhouse Honors,” Arthur Wagner, founding chair and emeritus professor, UC San Diego Department of Theatre & Dance, and the past board chairs of the Playhouse will also be honored. Proceeds from the gala benefit the Playhouse’s New Play Development and Education and Outreach Programs. The Lead Sponsor for the evening is Qualcomm. The gala will be hosted by Emmy-nominated actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, star of the television show “Modern Family” … Pardee Homes received several awards at the International Builders Show held Jan. 13 in Orlando, Fla. Highlands Village in North County won Gold awards in the Nationals competition and Best in American Living Awards, and Highlands Village in Carmel Valley earned a Gold for Best Product Design of Attached Product, and in BALA, a second Gold for the design of Plan 1X in the Multi-Family Housing Up to Five Stories category … The International Rescue Committee of San Diego received a $7,500 grant from USTA Serves, the National Charitable Foundation of the U.S. Tennis Association. The grant provides disadvantaged, at-risk children in underserved communities as well as people with disabilities the opportunity to learn to play tennis and improve their academic skills in a structured format … Outreach for Humanity was named finalist for the BBB Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics. Since 2008, when the organization was formed, they have donated $400,000 and 5,000 volunteer hours. John Wallace, owner of JW Flooring Covering and ReSource Floors, founded the nonprofit to help the community, especially children and the military … The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes celebration was held Jan. 29 at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. The walk, which was held Nov. 13, raised $700,000 to fund diabetes research in pursuit of a cure. Amylin Pharmaceuticals received the top corporate team award for raising the most funds. Other top fundraisers included Dexcom, Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation, USE Credit Union and Coca-Cola Bottling Co. … In honor of its 75th year in business, R. W. Smith & Co. has donated commercial kitchen equipment to Father Joe’s Villages. The equipment is used to support the Culinary Arts Program for residents in rehabilitation programs. In addition, Smith employees will provide volunteers to assist Father Joe’s in its mission … Cierra Halstead was named Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. She was recognized for her superior leadership skills, academic achievement, obstacles overcome and outstanding service to the community. Halstead was awarded a $1,250 scholarship courtesy of Blackburn Foundation and Ted Vallas. The runners-up, who will also receive scholarships, were Corey Cummins, Julianna Garner and Faith Waters … BIA Cares donated 300 bicycles and helmets during its Holiday Bike Drive. The membership raised $17,000 to purchase the bikes and distribute them to charities and toy drives throughout San Diego. The drive was established in 1995 by Eric Jones of Urban Real Estate and Mark McMillin of The Corky McMillin Cos. BIA Cares has provided 6,000 bikes to children since that time … The San Diego Armed Services YMCA’s Midnight Masquerade Father Daughter Dance was set for Feb. 19 at the San Diego Marriott Mission Valley. Military daughters were able to shop for dresses at the Second Annual “Dress Day” and choose their pick of more than 250 donated dresses.
