The 65th annual Salute to the Champions is set for Feb. 15 at the Town and Country Resort & Conference Center. Steve Wampler will receive the 2010 Challenged Athlete of the Year Award. Wampler was the first person with cerebral palsy to climb El Capitan, a 3,000-foot vertical peak in Yosemite National Park. Four former National Football League stars were voted into the Hall of Fame, Class of 2011, by the San Diego Hall of Champions. The inductees are: John Lynch, a Torrey Pines High and Stanford University graduate, drafted by Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1993 and a member of the 2002 Tampa team that won Super Bowl XXXVII in Qualcomm Stadium; Paul Lowe, the original Mr. Charger who played nine seasons for the San Diego Chargers; La’Roi Glover, a San Diego State University graduate and a four-year starter; and Lincoln Kennedy, a three-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle from Morse High School … Grossmont Healthcare District gave a $49,000 grant to help fund CASA’s Students Together Against Alcohol ’N Drugs, a youth advocacy program. STAAND provides training of students enrolled at East County high schools and area colleges in leadership and communication skills and education about the health risks associated with alcohol, marijuana, tobacco and prescription drug abuse … The Rose Foundation in Rancho Santa Fe has offered a challenge grant of $70,000 to Voices for Children which must be matched 2-to-1. VFC is launching a new initiative in 2011, the Infants & Toddlers Program, which addresses the critical needs of San Diego County’s youngest foster children who have been or are close to being declared dependents of the court. “We are so grateful to Pamela and Martin Wygod for their compassionate concern for these youngest victims of neglect, abuse or abandonment,” said VFC’s chief executive officer, Sharon Lawrence … The UC San Diego Student Foundation hosted a barbecue lunch Jan. 28 to educate their fellow students on how their education is being funded. Students pay more than $11,000 per year to attend the university but the costs of the education are double that amount per student. The additional financing comes from private donors. The Student Foundation awards scholarships which come from fellow UCSD students. To date the foundation has awarded $60,000 in scholarships … Kelly Elementary School received a $5,000 donation from Gafcon to enhance outdoor areas for students. Robin Duveen, vice president of operations for Gafcon, presented the check to Tressie Armstrong, principal of Kelly Elementary in Carlsbad on Jan. 28 … The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito held a Shred-A-Thon fundraiser on Jan. 22. Participants brought confidential documents to shred on-site at the event. Donations of $5 per copy box were accepted to raise a total of $1,000 to support the programs of the club … The NTC Foundation received a $45,000 grant from Las Patronas, which will be used for a sign at an entrance to NTC on Rosecrans Street. Dance groups, galleries and music studios will be able to promote classes, events, fundraisers and other activities, and NTC will be identified as a thriving arts center … The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary is hosting the 46th annual Women of Dedication Luncheon on Feb. 24 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. Fifteen women are set to be recognized for their contributions to the San Diego community. Proceeds from the event will support the Transitional Living Center and the Haven program located at the Margaret Cargill Campus in San Diego … The American Heart Association held its National Wear Red for Women Day on Feb. 4. The purpose is to raise awareness about women’s elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and to encourage women to get screened for heart disease.
