ResMed Chief Named CEO at CareFusion

Kieran Gallahue, who was named to head up ResMed Inc. only two years ago as chief executive officer, is taking over as CEO and chairman at CareFusion Corp., the companies said Feb. 1.

Gallahue, 47, succeeds David Schlotterbeck, who previously announced plans to retire later this month.

At ResMed, the Poway-based maker of devices to help people with sleep disorders, founder and Executive Chairman Peter Farrell, comes out of retirement to serve as interim CEO and president until a successor can be found.

Gallahue joined ResMed in 2003 as president and COO of the Americas, and was promoted the following year to global president and chief operating officer.

In a statement, Gallahue said he was taking “a rare opportunity to join a company with an end-to-end portfolio of category leading products yet with such growth potential on the top and bottom lines.”

ResMed did about $920 million in sales in 2009, ranking it No. 10 on the San Diego Business Journal’s List of Largest Public Companies based on revenue. CareFusion, which makes a variety of medical devices and was spun off from Cardinal Health in 2009, had $3.59 billion in sales for the same year, and it ranked third on the list.
