Founders Gala Celebrates USD’s People and Educational Presence

The University of San Diego held its Founders Gala Nov. 5 at the Hahn University Center on campus. The $425,000 raised will go to the Founders’ Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides financial support to undergraduate, graduate and law students. The gala celebrates the university’s co-founders Bishop Charles Francis Buddy and Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill. Darlene Shiley was the honorary chair and Coreen Petti, USD assistant vice president of marketing and strategic partnerships, was the gala’s committee chair. The founders sponsor was Bartell Hotels. Legacy sponsors included Cisco, Coca-Cola and Trace3. USD’s President Mary Lyons gave a closing speech to the evening, focusing on the benefits of a USD education … Clearpoint Agency held a food drive over Thanksgiving collecting donations to the San Diego Food Bank. In addition, one of Clearpoint’s clients BluFi Lending, an online home loan lending company in Carlsbad, collected 96 pounds of food for the San Diego Food Bank. The Printing Industries Association of San Diego held its food drive from Nov. 9 to 18, resulting in a donation of 878 pounds of canned and boxed food. These donations will aid in feeding 483,000 individuals in San Diego County … Union Bank honored Michelle Parada and Brandie Taylor during the 2011 Native American Heritage Month. Union Bank partners with KPBS to celebrate the contributions of exceptional community leaders for making a difference by improving their workplace, profession, neighborhood, community, region and the world. This is part of the Local Heroes program which reflects the diversity of San Diego … Sundt Construction’s employees donated a total of $15,000 to eight local organizations this quarter. All of these organizations are dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children and adults. Those receiving grants are: Casa de Amparo, Fresh Start Surgical Gifts and Monarch School, each receiving $2,500. The Elizabeth Hospice Foundation received $2,000; Barrio Logan College Institute, Burn Institute and Just in Time for Foster Youth all received $1,500. A $1,000 grant was given to Hospice of the North Coast … Junior Seau hosted the 17th Annual Shop with a Jock at Target Mission Valley store Dec. 6. Underprivileged children from San Diego joined Seau to shop for gifts for their loved ones. Each of the 250 kids were given a $100 gift certificate. The mission of this program is to teach the kids about giving rather than receiving during the holidays … Fidelity Investments donated $24,000 of new musical instruments to Creative Performing Arts Middle School. The donation was made as part of Fidelity’s ongoing effort to support musical programs in schools across the country … Peers Network held its third annual gala Nov. 12 at an estate in Rancho Santa Fe. The event raised $180,000 to benefit Just in Time for Foster Youth. The title sponsor for the event was First American Title. Other sponsors included Wilson, Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati Foundation, Aequitas Capital Management, Deutsche Bank and Bridgepoint Education … The San Diego Armed Services YMCA had a record number of military families apply for holiday assistance, which the organization distributes Dec. 15. Each enlisted military family receives two new toys through the SuperParent Holiday Shopping Day. Other Armed Service YMCA holiday programs include the adopt a family “Holiday Elf Program” and holiday parties for military children with autism and special needs … As part of the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl and San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, the 21st Annual Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade will be held Dec. 28. The parade is presented by San Diego County Credit Union and will be televised Dec. 30 at 8 a.m. on the USA Network. Other events surrounding the parade include the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals, Bumble Bee Foods 5K Run and the Amtrak Family Festival. The 34th annual Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl is set for Dec. 28 at Qualcomm Stadium.
