The Nice Guys San Diego announced Ted Rossin as Nice Guy 2011 at a luncheon held July 13 at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse. Each year, Nice Guys recognize someone who has given time, money and support to help San Diegans improve their lives. Rossin has been a leader in the steel industry for many years and has been active in the construction industry. He has served on the board of Associated General Contractors San Diego Chapter and was named its president in 2001. Rossin gives back to the community serving on the board of the the Century Club of San Diego, Bannister Family House and is a supporter of Mulcahy Food for Marine Families, Pro Kids and many other organizations. Nice Guys will recognize Rossin at its 32nd anniversary celebration Oct. 15 at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina …The Irving Group donated $20,000 to the San Diego Police Foundation to purchase 144 digital camera kits, a top priority of the San Diego Police Department. Patrol officers will now have a full digital camera kit as a tool for gathering evidence when responding to calls. “I am thrilled to be a part of this campaign which helps the police department in building a safe community for everyone who works, stays and plays in San Diego,” said Craig Irving, president of The Irving Group … Promises2Kids held its summer concert gala event June 20 at the home of Joan Waitt in La Jolla. The Doobie Brothers were the headline act for the event which raised $400,000 to help abused, neglected and abandoned children. Donating sponsors were Bridgepoint Education, Cubic Corp., Gatto, Pope & Walwick and Redfearn & Associates … The California Landscape Contractors Association’s annual Beautification Awards program was held June 24 at the Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College. The three top award winners were Ciro’s Landscaping of Escondido; Nature Designs Landscaping of Vista; and The Brickman Group of San Diego … Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County held its golf tournament May 19 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. The event, sponsored by Sycuan Casino, raised $178,000 for recruiting, screening and matching 148 BB/BS participants, and providing the monitoring of those one-to-one mentoring relationships … The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA is holding its 25th annual Fur Ball gala Aug. 20 at the Gaines Street campus. “Dancing with the Dogs,” the theme for this year’s event, is honoring Petco and the Petco Foundation for their longtime support of SDHS and animal welfare causes nationwide … The Asian Heritage Society of San Diego will honor Admiral Ron MacLaren with its first Diversity Pioneer Award at the Asian Heritage Awards gala Aug. 20. MacLaren is the first Korean-American to reach admiralty rank in the U.S. Navy. He is recognized for his naval career and his efforts to recruit more Asian Americans to the flag officer ranks. In 2009, MacLaren came out of retirement to run the Joint Contingency Acquisition Support Office … San Diego Self Storage conducted a drive to benefit Homefront San Diego which provides active duty military families with ongoing needs in San Diego County. “We’re very pleased with the response from the public and our facility tenants who came through with useful donations that will help these military families with much-needed items,” said Steven Teixeira, SDSS director of Property Management … Boy Scouts of America presented Mike McKinnon, owner of KUSI-TV, with the Distinguished Citizen of the Year award June 29 at the Champions of Scouting event held at USS Midway Museum. Major sponsors included US Bank, Jerome’s Furniture, Evans Hotels, Manpower and Sycuan Casino. The event netted $175,000 to support the Scouts. Another event, held June 3, raised $15,000 to support scouting. A Friends of Scouting community breakfast was held at the Scottish Rite Center and featured Olympic medal winner Dwight Stones.
