Ellen DeGeneres will receive the Petco Foundation’s inaugural HOPE Award, which celebrates the spirit of hope through a life dedicated to promoting the human-animal bond. Petco Foundation will present the award at its third annual fundraising gala on April 30. DeGeneres is a longtime friend of the Petco Foundation and co-owner of pet food maker Halo, Purely for Pets. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Halo Pet Foundation. “We are fortunate to have a great many active supporters, and it’s always an honor for us to celebrate the work being done by our friends and partners to help animals in need,” said Paul Jolly, executive director of the Petco Foundation … Dr. Michael Lobatz was honored by Parkinson’s Association of San Diego as its 2011 Health Hero for his leadership role in a program designed to improve the quality of care received by patients with Parkinson’s disease. The awards event was presented by Combined Health Agencies on March 16 at The Prado in Balboa Park. Lobatz has taken the lead in spearheading an emergency room and hospital training program on how to best treat people with Parkinson’s … San Diego Social Venture Partners is partnering with the Camp Pendleton Armed Services YMCA and Reboot. Each organization will receive grants and in-kind gifts of $600,000 as part of SDSVP’s three-year commitment to the organizations. The grants will help ease the burden that local service members and their families face as a result of ongoing military engagements overseas. Using the venture capital approach, SDSVP’s unique model provides nonprofits with a plan for long-term success … TV Ears has donated $25,000 to the San Diego Senior Games Association for 2011 events. TV Ears, a manufacturer of TV listening devices, is the title sponsor for the Second Annual North County Games and the San Diego Senior Olympics … In celebration of National Nutrition Awareness Month, SuperKids for SuperFoods donated $2,560 and more than 300 pounds of food to the SuperFood Drive, providing 7,000 meals to those in need. The organization is a service-learning program which informs students on health and the benefits of nutritious foods. The original pilot of the SuperKids program was made possible by the Feeding the Soul Foundation’s CD release sales last December … The DPR Foundation donated $40,000 to StandUp For Kids to help fund the Don’t Run Away program and outreach centers in Oceanside and San Diego. The program helps teach students in the classroom about the alternatives to running away from home and the available resources. The program also has an outreach effort that helps locate and assist homeless and at-risk children … Ben & Jerry’s and the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA was set to hold its 32nd annual Free Cone Day on April 12 at the Westfield Shoppingtown at Horton Plaza. Donations received go to support the programs and services of the Humane Society … Six UC San Diego faculty members were honored March 31 at the Chancellor’s Associates Faculty Excellence Awards. Their outstanding accomplishments were recognized with a citation and a $2,500 award. The recipients of the 2011 Chancellor’s Associates Faculty Excellence Awards were: Gail Heyman, Ph.D., professor of psychology, for excellence in undergraduate teaching; Mark Kritchevsky, M.D., professor of neurosciences, for excellence in graduate teaching; Gordon Hanson, Ph.D., professor of international economics, for excellence in research in humanities and social sciences; William Gerwick, Ph.D., professor of oceanography and pharmaceutical science, for excellence in research in science and engineering; Camille Forbes, Ph.D., associate professor of literature, for excellence in community; and Anthony Davis, professor of music, for excellence in visual and the

performing arts.
