Richard Atkinson, former University of California president and UC San Diego chancellor emeritus, and his wife, Rita, have given $5.7 million for the graduate fellowships at UCSD to support the “Invent the Future” campaign, which has a goal of raising $50 million for graduate fellowships and undergraduate scholarships. The support provides funding for graduate students who are conducting groundbreaking work with faculty members … The Celebrating Life Benefit Dinner and Regatta supporting Sharp HospiceCare was held Aug. 27 and 28 at the Hotel del Coronado. Grossmont Healthcare District was the presenting sponsor along with Sodexo, PMS and Sempra Energy. The $200,000 raised goes to the Homes for Hospice Program, which offers residential living environments for people with major illnesses … San Diego Chargers Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates is being honored Oct. 22 by the San Diego chapter of Huntington’s Disease Society of America. Dr. Leslie Thompson, an HD researcher at UC Irvine, is also being honored. The 10th annual Celebration of Hope Gala is being held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Proceeds go to benefit the HDSA Center of Excellence for Family Services and Research at UCSD … On Aug. 29, Stay Classy hosted the Fourth Annual San Diego Fire Run/Walk from La Jolla to Pacific Beach, which raised $10,000 for San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation, Make-A-Wish San Diego, Surfrider Foundation, Volunteer San Diego and Jeans 4 Justice … The St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services’ LUV Gala was held Aug. 28 at the Hotel del Coronado. Sponsors included Morgan Stanley, The Michael Ehrenfeld Co., PharMerica and Cubic Corp. The $90,000 raised will support the Memory Care Program which provides the aging population of San Diego with additional options for care and services … Rebuilding Together San Diego joined forces with PepsiCo to renovate a recently closed elementary school that is being turned into a multiservice community center which will be the home to numerous nonprofit organizations. PepsiCo designated Sept. 11 as its “National Day of Service” … The Youth Services Spring Valley Community Center is one of Pepsi’s seven service projects across the country … Home Start received a $10,000 contribution from US Bank for the Maternity Shelter Program. This program expands the capacity within the San Diego region to prevent homelessness among underserved young women and their children by offering supervised housing in the region. “We are so thankful for our new partnership with US Bank and their commitment to these vulnerable and deserving families in our community,” said Home Start Chief Executive Officer Laura Mustari … San Diego Habitat for Humanity worked with “Season of Service” volunteers and churches to help build and raise funds for a home for a family in National City. The Muang family, originally from Sudan, was selected for home ownership. The efforts culminated with San Diego CityFest, a daylong celebration held Sept. 11 at Mission Bay Park. Luis Palau and SDHFH Executive Director Brad Bates presented the keys to the house to the Muang family … Mille Fleurs hosted the Casa de Amparo Champions for Children on Sept. 19 at the restaurant in Rancho Santa Fe. Bertrand Hug of Mille Fleurs and B Cellars winery were sponsors. Champions for Children consists of individuals and corporations who donate more than $1,000 to Casa de Amparo, an organization dedicated to raising awareness of, and preventing, child abuse. Members include BioClean Environmental Services and California Bank & Trust … University of Phoenix San Diego campuses partnered with Words Alive for a book drive which was held from June 25 through Aug. 31. More than 500 books were collected. The University of Phoenix San Diego also donated $5,000 worth of supplies. The supplies were distributed to four San Diego Schools, including Monarch School.
