Port to Launch Environmental Study for Convention Center Addition

The San Diego Unified Port District’s Board of Port Commissioners directed its staff to begin an environmental review process for the proposed expansion of the San Diego Convention Center in a vote Sept. 7.

The first step in conducting the review of the project starts soon when the port district staff will review possible consultants for the board to select by December.

The proposed expansion would add 200,000 to 250,000 square feet of exhibit space, 100,000 square feet of meeting rooms, and 80,000 square feet of multipurpose ballrooms. The project also includes building a 250- to 500-room hotel next to the center, retail space and a parking area.

According to the Port of San Diego, which built the original and first expansion of the convention center, the proposed expansion would generate $698 million in annual economic activity above the $1.3 billion that is now being generated.

Five architectural design teams are vying for work on the expansion, and the board is expected to make its selection in October.
