A Lifetime of Community Leadership Praised and Honored

The United Way of San Diego County presented its first James F. Mulvaney Community Leadership Award at its Open House and Legacy Recognition event Oct. 6. Jim Mulvaney, who died just days after his four sons accepted the award in his honor, was founder and senior partner of Mulvaney, Kahan & Barry, and was the inaugural recipient of the award. He had been a United Way Worldwide board member since 1984. In addition, Mulvaney has served as chairman of St. Vincent de Paul and Father Joe’s Villages and San Diego Organizing Project. He has also chaired the California Higher Education Loan Authority … The American Red Cross-San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter raised $175,000 at the 2010 Real Heroes Awards breakfast held at the USS Midway Museum on Oct. 1. Proceeds from the event go to ensure the continuation of vital community services and programs offered by the Red Cross … Sharp HealthCare Foundation received a $100,000 grant from the Center for Technology and Aging. The grant will be used to fund a program to monitor the daily vital signs and health status of senior patients in their homes. Sharp was one of only five organizations in the nation to be awarded by the center … The annual San Diego City Fire Fighters and Friends Celebrity Waiters Luncheon was held on Sept. 24 at the Coronado Marriott. The event raised $45,000 to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego County programs … Junior Seau honored Rolf Benirschke at Junior Seau Foundation’s 10th Annual Teammates luncheon held Oct. 12 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. Sponsors included Filippi’s Pizza, Edco Disposal, Wells Fargo and Dowling and Yahnke. Benirschke, a former San Diego Chargers player, was recognized for his success on and off the field and was presented a $10,000 check from the Seau Foundation for the charity of his choice. Proceeds from the luncheon support the programs of the Junior Seau Foundation … Southwestern College received a $7,000 grant from the California Department of Boating and Waterways, which will go to provide scholarships for students at the Crown Cove Aquatic Center. The new funding has allowed the center to pay for new equipment … Walmart donated $7,500 to Feeding America San Diego as well as associates volunteering at the Feeding America distribution center. The Fighting Hunger Together initiative of Walmart has been a dedicated partner of Feeding America since 2005 … The Corky McMillin Cos. donated their 20,000-square-foot warehouse at NTC for the third annual BIA Cares Furniture Fantasy Sale on Oct. 2. The Building Industry Association of San Diego County sponsored the event, which raised $47,000. Home furnishings, office furniture, accessories and appliances were supplied from area model homes, offices and supply companies … The second annual Food 4 Kids Backpack Fundraiser raised $23,500 in cash and 1,637 pounds of food which goes to the San Diego Food Bank’s Backpack Program and will feed 100 children this year. Several restaurants participated through the dollar-a-dish program. Among the top contributors were Casa Guadalajara, Casa de Bandini and Casa de Pico, which raised $2,755; $719 from George’s at the Cove; and $1,500 from O’Brothers … A team of Cricket Communications employees joined with volunteers to work on a renovation project for Azalea Park in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego on Oct. 2.
