Three foundations — The Legler Benbough Foundation, The Parker Foundation and the Balboa Park Trust Committee of The San Diego Foundation — have come together with a $120,000 lead gift to support the launch of the Balboa Park Conservancy and its operations. “This pledge of support is a demonstration of leadership by the three foundations in preserving the integrity and beauty of Balboa Park for generations to come,” said Bob Kelly, president and chief executive officer of The San Diego Foundation … Voices for Children’s Starry, Starry Night event was held Sept. 10 at the home of Joan Waitt in La Jolla. VFC, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, presented Waitt and her family with the first Celestial Award. They were recognized for their support of women and children who are victims of domestic violence and abuse. In addition, Joan Waitt was recognized for serving as the first co-chair of the new VFC Community Advisory Council. The event raised $600,000 to help fund the Court Appointed Special Advocates recruited by VFC as they work to place children into a safe, permanent home. Sponsors of the evening included Irving Hughes, Bank of America, Genentech, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage and ProFlowers … Meals-on-Wheels, Greater San Diego held its annual Dine With the Chefs Gala on Sept. 11 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel. Dr. John and Karen Morse were honored for their support and dedication to San Diego seniors, and the New Car Dealers Association received special recognition for providing a decade of assistance and funding. The $130,000 raised helps the agency to continue contributing to the well-being of seniors by providing them with regular nutrition and daily contact with a caring volunteer … The Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge was held Sept. 12 at the Silver Gate Yacht Club. San Diego County Credit Union was the presenting sponsor for the event, which raised $240,000 to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. Offshore Boat Centers and Yamaha were also sponsors … Mayor Jerry Sanders declared Sept. 21 United Way Day as the organization kicked off its yearlong 90th anniversary celebration. United Way President and CEO Doug Sawyer joined the mayor along with United Way of San Diego partner organizations, donors, volunteers and individuals assisted by UWSD at the ceremony held at the NTC Promenade at Liberty Station … Jolyn Parker was named the Combined Health Agencies Volunteer of the Year. Parker is a member of the board of directors for San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine. “Her commitment to the community where she lives and works, and her passion in relieving suffering and promoting quality of life led her to us,” said Kathleen Pacurar, CEO of San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine … The Barney & Barney Foundation donated $100,000 to eight charities Sept. 15 at a benefit concert held at The Grand Del Mar. Center for Community Solutions received $20,000; Operation Homefront $15,000; MAAC Project $15,000; and The Bay Institute, Casa de Amparo, Ronald McDonald House, PLAYWORKS, and Talk About Curing Autism each received $10,000. The foundation was established last year in recognition of Barney & Barney’s centennial anniversary in keeping with the company’s longstanding tradition of charitable giving … The New Children’s Museum held its 2010 Gala on Aug. 21 at the museum. Sponsors included Skin Authority, Hard Rock Hotel and Irving Hughes. Proceeds from the event provide funding for educational opportunities to children at San Diego’s neediest schools.
