The Petco Foundation announced a $1 million grant to support the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA at the annual San Diego Walk for Animals event held May 1. The grant will be funded for five years and will benefit animal welfare programs, pet adoption services and animal rescue services at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s three campuses. “Petco’s continued support of our mission has helped us grow and flourish, allowing us to help more people and companion animals in San Diego County,” said Dr. Mark Goldstein, Humane Society president ... As part of “HD Awareness Month,” the San Diego chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society announced a fundraising campaign at San Diego Chargers Park on May 4. The goal of the campaign is to raise $500,000 to be used toward research for the cure. Bill Johnston, a San Diego Chargers staff member, and his wife, Ramona, who suffers from Huntington’s disease, were on hand for the kickoff event along with Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates and his teammates from the San Diego Chargers … The Rady Children’s Hospital Carmel Valley Auxiliary unit raised $500,000 at the Sounds of Hope for Children concert held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Chadwick Center for Children and Families at Rady Children’s Hospital where young people and families who have been subjected to abuse, neglect and trauma receive treatment and support … The Grossmont Healthcare District presented $76,500 in scholarships to 34 high school students interested in health care-related careers. The students from 17 different high schools in the East County were selected for their academic excellence and outstanding citizenship. Two students from each school received a GHD scholarship of either $1,500 or $3,000 … Torrey Pines Bank has donated $64,000 from its cash-back program. Among the beneficiaries receiving contributions is the Thomas Jefferson School of Law, which received $18,600 from the bank’s Charitable Contributions Program to go toward the building fund for its downtown campus, and the Neighborhood Housing Association, which received $8,000 … United Way held its third annual “Stuff the Bus!” sports equipment drive May 1. The program benefits Promises2Kids, which will distribute the donations to other community-based organizations such as Casa de Amparo, Walden Family Services and San Diego Center for Children. Sport Chalet, Westfield Mission Valley and Boyer Moving & Storage were supporters of the event. “We hope that with this equipment, these kids can connect with the joy of sports, stay fit and build a better sense of self,” said Doug Sawyer, president and chief executive officer, United Way of San Diego County … On May 5, Harrah’s Rincon Casino & Resort hosted a celebration to kick off its partnership with Second Wind Dreams and the Harrah’s Foundation. Participating care centers received items for residents in their facilities such as a computer and LCD projector. “The foundation’s partnership is another way that we continue to show support for the senior citizens in the communities in which we do business,” said Janet Beronio, general manager at Harrah’s Rincon … Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County hosted a Mother’s Day celebration for military wives and mothers at The Abby Reinke Wire Mountain Community Center at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The event included makeovers and a special gift for each of the military mothers of the Operation Bigs program.
