San Diego State University received a $4 million commitment from Charles and Robin Luby, which was announced at the Monty Awards on April 24. The Lubys received a Monty Award for their contributions to the university. They have been active volunteers for several decades, serving on the SDSU Alumni Association board of directors. The gift will come from their estate and will support the SDSU Library. “With this donation we will be able to meet the changing needs of the modern student,” said Jon Cawthorne, interim dean of SDSU Library and Information Access … On April 24, the Century Club of San Diego announced the results of the fifth annual Diamond in the Rough Gala, which was held Jan. 23 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. The event was produced in concert with the 2010 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines and raised $340,000 for Monarch School. The proceeds will be used for after-school programs, visual and performing arts, field trips, mentoring and tutoring, and post-graduation support. “Despite a challenging economy, those involved made great things happen for Monarch School,” said Tom Wornham, Century Club chairman … Cathy Repinski of Chula Vista was selected as the San Diego ambassador for the Mother’s Day Walk to Empower. The award recognizes youths who go above and beyond in serving their community, through their leadership abilities and/or their quality or level of community service in El Cajon. The award was presented at a City Council meeting April 27 … Casa de Amparo held its 14th annual Meet the Chefs of Del Mar on April 18 at the Hilton San Diego/Del Mar. All proceeds benefit the child abuse prevention programs at Casa de Amparo … In celebration of Jewish Heritage Month and Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Union Bank N.A. and KPBS Public Broadcasting have named four San Diegans as the 2010 Local Heroes for their outstanding community service. The Jewish Heritage honorees are Ellen Beck and Marjory Kaplan, and the Asian Pacific American honorees are Divya Kakaiya and Lee Ann Kim. Local community heroes are recognized for making a difference by improving their workplace, profession, neighborhood and community.
