The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Pacific South Coast Chapter held its San Diego County Credit Union 2010 Walk MS events April 24 and 25. On April 24, the walk was held at NTC Park at Liberty Station and raised $399,000. The April 25 walk was held at Legoland California in Carlsbad and raised $217,000. The total $616,000 supports MS research and services and programs for people with MS, a chronic, unpredictable and disabling neurological disease of the central nervous system with no known cause, cure or prevention. San Diego County Credit Union was the title sponsor for the ninth year. Other sponsors included KNSD-TV 7/39, Souplantation, Don Francisco’s Coffee, PepsiCo Inc. and Papa John’s Pizza … BAE Systems, a global defense, security and aerospace company, donated $150,000 to United Through Reading. The funds are designated for the organization’s Military Program, which offers deployed service members the opportunity to be recorded on DVD reading storybooks to their children at home. The United Through Reading Military Program also received $24,000 from Birdies for the Brave, a PGA Tour Charities Inc. program which supports members of the U.S. armed forces and their families … United Parcel Service of America Inc. has awarded Paul Warrington of Rancho Cucamonga the Jim Casey Community Service Award. The Casey Award was created to recognize outstanding community service. Warrington, an assistant chief pilot with UPS Airlines, was recognized for his commitment to the impoverished and underserved people of Cambodia as well as service to local communities in the United States. He and his wife have led numerous mission trips to Cambodia to help improve the lives of residents by donating supplies and providing education on water purification methods and disease control … LPL Financial has donated $50,000 to Cal State San Marcos to provide scholarships for College of Business Administration students. The gift will also support CoBA’s new Student Value Improvement Program, which is aimed at providing students with a holistic business education, and provide funding to ACE Scholars Services, a program that supports former foster youth … Three Sempra Energy subsidiaries and the Sempra Energy Foundation donated $150,000 to assist victims of the series of earthquakes in Baja California, Mexico. The Sempra Energy Foundation’s $70,000 contribution is directed to Rotary International and the Mexicali Red Cross. Sempra Generation, Sempra LNG and Sempra Pipelines & Storage will donate the other $80,000 toward hospital reconstruction efforts as well as purchasing equipment for the Mexicali Citizen Protection Department’s rescue and prevention task force … Bridgepoint Education awarded four San Diego teachers full scholarships to the company’s Ashford University. The scholarship presentations were part of Teacher Appreciation Night held April 16 at Petco Park prior to a San Diego Padres game. The recipients will use the scholarships to earn a Master of Arts degree in teaching and learning with technology or a Master of Arts in education degree. Those receiving scholarships were Tamara Davis, Amber Ernest, Natalie Priester and Cheryl Kaiser … Chris Padilla and The Padilla Family Foundation pledged $100,000 to Barrio Logan College Institute to support the College Prep Programs. Contributions received between now and Aug. 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000 by the foundation. Padilla grew up in Barrio Logan and was the first in his family to go to college. He attended the University of Southern California and graduated with a business degree … Several Padres players hosted a Major League Baseball Players Trust “Buses for Baseball” event April 20, prior to the game. Students from High Tech High Chula Vista were guests at the game played against the San Francisco Giants. The students received signed autographs of the players, souvenirs, food and beverages. The Players Trust is supported by the San Diego Padres organization.
