Petco Settles Case Alleging Overcharges, Mistreatment

Petco Animal Supplies Inc. paid $1.75 million in penalties and legal costs to settle allegations of overcharging customers and mistreating pets that it sells, City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said June 2.

San Diego-based Petco, with more than $2 billion in annual sales and whose name graces the downtown ballpark financed mainly by public funds, did not admit liability in a case that was prosecuted by Goldsmith’s office along with the district attorneys of five California counties including San Diego County.

The case stemmed from state and county inspections of Petco stores from 2005 to 2008, some of which revealed that Petco’s cages were not adequately cleaned and maintained. In some instances, sick animals were not identified and removed from habitats on the sales floor, according to a report from Goldsmith’s office.

In the overcharging allegations, Petco failed to remove expired price tags from store shelves, resulting in actual or potential customer overcharges. The company also failed to adequately train its employees on weighing and charging for bulk sales items such as dog food, according to the city attorney’s office.
