LEAD San Diego presented the 2010 Herbert G. Klein Visionary Award to Dr. Chris Searles at the Eighth Annual Awards event held May 27 at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina. Searles is the director of Clinical Outreach at St. Vincent de Paul and is also the co-director of the UC San Diego Combined Program. The organizations partner to provide integrated family medicine and psychiatry training that is focused on a high-risk and underserved patient population. The award is presented to an individual who has not only made a significant leadership contribution to the community but who has demonstrated potential to effect further change upon graduation from the LEAD program … The Milagros Unit, the only auxiliary unit of Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego comprised of Spanish women, held its fundraiser, Heard It Through the Grapevine, on June 6 at Flower Hill Promenade. Local restaurants and wineries participated with the auxiliary to raise $40,000 to benefit Children’s Hospital … The Petco Foundation hosted the Hands to Paws Gala on June 5 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront to celebrate and benefit three groups dedicated to helping pets and working animals. The event raised $107,000 for Pets Are Wonderful Support, or PAWS; Spay Neuter Action Project, or SNAP; and the San Diego Police Foundation … Volunteers from Deloitte’s San Diego office participated in Impact Day, a one-day celebration of Deloitte’s commitment to community involvement and workplace volunteerism, on June 11. The funds will be used to support the building of the Casa de Amparo Children’s Services Center and three emergency shelter cottages in San Marcos … The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Inc. donated two truckloads of consumer goods to the San Diego Food Bank. The donations came from exhibitors at the annual NACDS Marketplace Conference held at the San Diego Convention Center. “This donation could not have come at a better time,” said Food Bank CEO Scofield Hage. The items will be distributed to families, individuals and other nonprofit organizations throughout San Diego County … The Del Sur Educational Foundation raised $21,000 at its first fundraising event held at the Del Sur Ranch House. The proceeds will fund the arts and music program for the 2010-2011 school year, and also provided seed money for the new Del Sur Farmers’ Market which opened in May … Mount Miguel High School received a $5,000 education grant from the Barona Band of Mission Indians as part of the Barona Education Grant program. The grant money will be used to purchase library books with topics ranging from English, science, economics and career training.… Safeway Inc., operator of Vons grocery stores, raised $1 million in support of people with disabilities at Easter Seals Southern California during its April charitable fundraising campaign. The money raised will directly benefit people with disabilities through job training and employment services, preschool and after-school services, autism services and assistance for people to move out of institutions and into their own home … The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Foundation announced The Leonard and Edith Polster Scholarships for 2010-2011 awarded to 18 students from North County. The awards were presented May 20 at the Hilton San Diego/Del Mar at a dinner hosted by the Polsters.
