Junior Achievement of San Diego & Imperial Counties inducted four San Diego business leaders into its San Diego Business Hall of Fame. The event was held Nov. 5 at the Hotel del Coronado. Laureate inductees for 2010 are: Delores McNeely, district manager, US Bank; Robert McNeely, senior executive adviser, Union Bank; Thomas Nassif, president and chief executive officer, Western Growers Association; and Stephen Williams, partner, Sentre Partners. The honorees are recognized for their excellence in business and contributions to the community. “These new lifetime laureates are excellent role models and examples of the success Junior Achievement students can achieve with hard work and perseverance,” said Joanne Pastula, president and CEO of Junior Achievement … Casa de Amparo raised $300,000 at the 12th Annual ProFlowers Crystal Ball Gala on Oct. 30. Karen Kogut was gala chair and Bob Zamarripa and Paul Judge of OneSource Distributors LLC were honorary chairs. “We are honored and touched to be able to help Casa Kids escape cycles of abuse and see brighter futures ahead,” said Bill Strauss, ProFlowers president and CEO and title partner of the gala. All proceeds will go directly to assist abused, neglected or at-risk children served by all five programs at Casa de Amparo … UC San Diego received a $1 million grant from the Amgen Foundation to provide hands-on laboratory experience to 100 undergraduates through the Amgen Scholars program. Students will participate in a summer research program. The Amgen Foundation and UC San Diego are supporting Stem Education and preparing the next generation of scientific leaders and innovators … The Scripps Clinic Golf Tournament was held Oct. 21. A dinner was held at Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines followed by golf on Oct. 22 at the Torrey Pines South Golf Course. The event raised $180,000 to benefit the Scripps Cancer Center’s Radiation Oncology Research and Treatment Center … The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 12th Annual Light the Night Walk was held Nov. 5 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The event raised $410,000 to fight cancer. Through the money raised, researchers are awarded grants to find a cure for cancer. The event sponsors included Bristol-Myers Squibb, Celgene Corp., Cephalon Oncology Inc., Idec Corp., Genentech/Biogen and TriLink Biotechnologies Inc. … The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s “Memories” gala was held Oct. 16 at La Costa Resort and Spa. Life Technologies Corp. was the presenting sponsor and Aegis Electronic Group Inc. was a platinum sponsor. The $180,000 raised goes towards operating funds for B&G Clubs of Carlsbad … PBSJ donated $1,500 to Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek. The contribution will go toward the conservation science experiments at the Millennial Tech Middle School Earth Lab in southeast San Diego … Grossmont Hospital Foundation raised $265,000 at its 25th Anniversary Gala on Nov. 13, which was held at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. Sponsors included the Glenn Napierskie Family, Grossmont Healthcare District, Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay Indians and the Barona Band of Mission Indians. Proceeds will support the hospital’s heart and vascular center … Lee Ann Allman was honored as Volunteer of the Year at the North County Philanthropy Council luncheon held Nov. 12 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Allman is a parent at Pacific Ridge School and has served as co-chair for the school’s Annual Fund. She was a key in the drive to help the Carlsbad nonprofit, independent school achieve 100 percent participation from a community of trustees, staff, faculty and families. She has also volunteered for other groups… Feeding America San Diego received a $15,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to connect low-income Americans with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The money will be used to hire a SNAP outreach coordinator who will provide pre-screening and application assistance to clients … The City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture received a $15,000 grant from the California Arts Council State-Local Partnership Program. The money will go toward increasing audiences and encouraging philanthropy in support of the region’s arts and culture programs.
