Sloan Gibson, president and chief executive officer of the national USO, is being honored by United Through Reading at its Storybook Ball scheduled for Nov. 14 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. United Through Reading’s mission is to unite families facing physical separation by facilitating the bonding experience of reading aloud together. This year’s event will include a celebration of having surpassed the 1 million mark for beneficiaries served. Title sponsor for the evening is Target, with a $100,000 contribution. Others included San Diego County Ford Dealers, New Car Dealers Association and Baker Electric Solar … Home Start received a $10,000 grant from the Price Family Charitable Fund for the Maternity Shelter Program. This program gives women who are pregnant or parenting a safe and supportive environment. Home Start’s educational programs help to give women the tools they need to rise above the risk of developing physical or emotional health and safety problems … The Salvation Army Door of Hope received an interior and exterior face-lift from the Building Owners and Managers Association on July 31. The 16th annual San Diego Building Owners and Managers Work Party consisted of property managers, brokers, architects, janitors, contractors, painters and other real estate industry professionals, painting, cleaning and repairing as well as providing extensive landscaping. The Door of Hope serves foster care teen mothers and their infants through a licensed group home for the teen mothers who are dependents or wards of the court. The program also works with juvenile court and child protective services … Hunt.Fish.Feed, an outreach program that utilizes game meat and fish donated by sportsmen, was at St. Vincent de Paul Village on Aug. 4 to feed 1,500 individuals struggling with hunger. Chad Belding, host of “The Fowl Life” TV show on The Sportsman Channel and an ambassador for Hunt.Fish.Feed, said “We’re thrilled to bring our initiative to the San Diego community. We look forward to working with our partners at St. Vincent, as well as Catalina Offshore Products, who donated the fish.” … The Chula Vista Nature Center received a Community Leadership Award from San Diego Gas & Electric for its contributions to the South County region. The Nature Center received a $5,000 check from SDG&E, which will help further its mission of promoting coastal resource conservation and environmental stewardship through education and family entertainment … The Junior Seau Foundation awarded $108,600 in scholarships to 28 graduating high school seniors who are the recipients of the foundation’s Scholars of Excellence Program. The ceremony was held Aug. 4 at the Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Hall. The amounts of the scholarships range from $2,500 to $5,000. The scholarships are funded through donations from businesses and individuals … The San Diego Regional Fire & Emergency Services Foundation received a $25,000 grant from the Grossmont Healthcare District for supplies and equipment to be used during medical emergencies and rescues by volunteer fire departments serving rural East County communities. The GHD grant will help satisfy unmet needs that cannot be met with funding from other sources, said Gloria Chadwick, 2010 GHD board president … The Kiehl’s skin care store at Fashion Valley mall kicked off Rev Up for Red on Aug. 5. The charity motorcycle ride raises money for amfAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research.
