Bits of Good News Popping Up for the Region’s Jobless

Well, there is some encouraging news here and there on the job hunting front. Escondido-based Stone Brewing, which claims to be the fastest-growing craft brewer in America, schedules a career open house on Aug. 9 to hire 35 more workers to help run its two new warehouses and catering facility. Despite the downturn in the economy, the beer maker says it has taken on 200 new employees during the past four years, and has increased its use of suppliers, contractors and vendors. Local staffing firm SkillStorm announced the second matriculating class for its new Speed sales training program. The program featured 10 recent graduates completing a six-week course, who will be placed in company offices nationwide. The program is proving so successful, says Chief Executive Officer Vince Virga, that he’s planning to hold another five to six classes within the year. Southwestern College announces Uncle Sam has awarded $128K for its clean-energy training and green building pre-apprenticeship programs — both created to prepare students for jobs in this fast-growing segment of the construction market … Not just for tequila! North County entrepreneurs Stew Duncan and Jeff Vance team to launch Nature’s Agave, an alternative sweetener using agave nectar, in 40 Henry’s Farmers Markets and Sun Harvest Farmers Markets throughout the U.S. Southwest … The local Better Business Bureau concludes its 13th annual Famous Faces TV ad campaign, which features local business owners touting the important role of the BBB. President and CEO Sheryl Bilbrey notes the ads feature 11 small-business personalities such as Henry and Tina Bellini of All American Paint and Body and Mary Jean Anderson of Anderson Plumbing Heating & Air. Plenty of others, too … The 2010 Port of San Diego Festival of Sail, hosted by the Maritime Museum of San Diego, features more than 20 tall ships Sept. 2-6. The festival kicks off with a parade of the vessels on San Diego Bay on the first day of the event … The performing arts world is getting into gear. The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus opens its 2010-2011 season Oct. 30 with guest artist Noriko Kawai performing Alexandre Scriabin’s “Prometheus,” scored for piano, chorus, orchestra and “color organ.” Video artist Ross Karre will stage a multimedia presentation as part of the show.
