Mitt Romney Leaves Snow Behind, Moves To La Jolla

Did you hear? Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is now a La Jolla resident, having purchased a $12 million home there that once belonged to Hollywood star Cliff Robertson. He told a reporter for The Associated Press recently that he still calls Massachusetts home, but he’s been awfully busy helping Meg Whitman with personal appearances in her bid for governor. Some whisper the popular Republican might be preparing to run for an office in the Golden State … A phoenix is rising in the east? A $1 million rehab of the historic Snowflake Baking Co. building located at the corner of 16th and G streets in East Village is nearing completion. Wright says several restaurants and a high-end auto dealership are looking … And while we’re talking about rehab, did you catch the news at City Hall last week? Mayor Jerry Sanders says he’ll repave 134 miles of streets involving 1,000 city blocks — at a cost of $47 million. “Keeping the streets in good condition is one of the most fundamental jobs of city government,” says the mayor. It’s the largest repaving effort in the history of San Diego, say his minions. Crews will also re-seal another 147 miles of road, he adds, thanks to money available through a $103 million bond issue … This is a surprise. LEAD San Diego Inc. top dog Judy Forrester leaves the local leadership development group to join Bank of America Corp. as an executive. Meanwhile, Vicky Carlson resigns from the board to become interim president and CEO while a three-month search gets under way … The U.S. Navy held ceremonies April 20 to mark completion of the reconstruction and upgrade to the main gates at Naval Station San Diego … Here’s a treat for the more creative among you. Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Inc., which has nine stores in San Diego County plus three on the way, sponsors a contest to see which customer can come up with the best reusable bag design. The winner receives a year’s worth of groceries, while runners-up receive $100 in gift certificates. The promotion was part of April 22’s Earth Day activities for the British purveyor of groceries.
