Six women were inducted into the San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame on March 27 at the ninth annual community partners ceremony held at UC San Diego’s Price Center. Awards are granted in the areas of empowerment, activism, trailblazing, cultural competency and historical preservation. This year’s inductees include: UCSD Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs Dr. Vivian Reznik; Justice Judith McConnell, a pioneer for women lawyers in San Diego County; Gloria Harris, co-author of the first book publishd on the subject of women’s assertiveness; and this year’s Spirit of the Hall of Fame Award recipient, Bree Walker for her groundbreaking work on television as a person with a disability. “This is a diverse group of women whose selfless contributions have advanced social justice and have made a lasting impact on our communities,” said the director of the UCSD Women’s Center, Emelyn de la Pena … The Waitt Family Foundation has made a donation of 27 televisions to the Ronald McDonald House which have been placed in individual bedrooms to allow families staying at the house the opportunity to watch TV in the privacy of their own rooms. Bill Lennartz, president and CEO of Ronald McDonald Charities of San Diego, said, “The Waitt Family Foundation’s donation makes it possible for our families to enjoy more of their leisure time in private which is important as they face the challenges of having a sick child.” … Angela Pierce, founder of the San Diego chapter of The Princess Project, received the 10News Leadership Award on March 24. The Princess Project works year-round to get ready for dress giveaway events in the spring when most high school girls are getting ready for prom. Pierce, a deputy city attorney, works evening and weekend hours with the project whose mission is to promote self-confidence and individuality for all high school girls … Emerging Leaders, a program of Jewish Family Service for young professionals, is holding the Ruby Schulman Memorial Golf Tournament to support the programs and services of JFS. The tournament is scheduled for June 11 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Sponsors include Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek, Redfearn & Associates, Waxie Sanitary Supply, Callaway Golf Co. and Karl Strauss Brewing Co. … Sempra Energy Foundation pledged $100,000 in disaster-relief assistance funds for victims of the Chilean earthquake. The funds will be directed through Hogar de Cristo, a nongovernmental organization that provides assistance to low-income families in Chile. “With our support and others’, we hope the people of Chile can overcome this tragedy and restart their lives,” said Jessie Knight, chairman of the board of directors of the Sempra Energy Foundation … Armstrong Egg Farms made a donation of 54,000 eggs and San Diego Gas & Electric Co. employees donated more than 250 stuffed toy bunny rabbits to Feeding America San Diego. The eggs were delivered to the food distribution center in Escondido on March 24 where low-income residents were able to pick up food. SDG&E distributed the stuffed toy bunny rabbits during the Farm2Kids program distribution. “This is the third year that Armstrong Egg Farms and SDG&E employees have made our distributions before the Easter holiday better for our participants,” said Larry Sly, executive director, Feeding America San Diego … Students from San Diego County competed in the regional MATHCOUNTS competition which was held at UC Irvine on March 20. Brandon Zeng, an eighth-grader from Carmel Valley Middle School, was one of the top two scores from Southern California. Students from The Bishop’s School, Black Mountain Middle School, Del Mar Heights Elementary School, Meadowbrook Middle School and Earl Warren Middle School also placed high in the competition.
