New York Times Columnist Coming to UCSD

A favorite quote comes from controversial 1960s UC San Diego professor Herbert Marcuse: “It is for the sake of those without hope that hope is given.” Despite our political differences, he had a lot to say about the era. So, let’s come full circle 40 years later. Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof speaks about his new book, “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide,” Oct. 28 on campus. The book covers his journey through Africa and Asia and his encounters with women struggling in dire circumstances and ways to help. He’s working three days a week in the Office of the Architect of the Capitol and two days a week for local U.S. Rep. Susan Davis. Abel and Ophelia Garcia opened Garcia’s in 1960, and granddaughter Belynn continues the business … The Vista-based Cancer for College’s annual Golf Classic raises more than $200,000 for its fund that benefits cancer survivors and amputees, thanks to help from Hollywood star Will Ferrell. The college is also holding an online auction, with the top bidder winning a trip to New York City to meet Ferrell on the set of a new film. The auction closes Oct. 15. The nonprofit was formed by two-time cancer survivor and double amputee Craig Pollard, who was Ferrell’s fraternity brother at the University of Southern California Meanwhile, par for the course: The Ray Romano and Kevin James Celebrity Golf Classic is set for Nov. 16 in Tarzana. This year’s golf classic, sponsored by the two high-profile celebrities, benefits La Jolla’s Scripps Research Institute Just in time for the holidays, coming up fast. Feeding America San Diego received $5,000 from Comerica Bank’s Western region. The money, a piece of $35,000 parceled out to food banks in California and Arizona, will help with local Thanksgiving programs, says Comerica executive J. Michael Fulton When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Best-selling La Jolla author, speaker and filmmaker Greg S. Reid releases his latest project, “Think and Grow Rich: Three Feet From Gold,” with Sharon Lechter. Working with The Napoleon Hill Foundation (Hill was the author of the original best-seller “Think and Grow Rich”), Reid and Lechter recount in a book and on film the success stories of many of today’s successful entrepreneurs, including the founder of Mrs. Fields Cookies and the founder of the Re/Max real estate brokerage.
