Foundation Takes the Initiative to Help 3 Local Arts Groups

Three San Diego County arts institutions received grants from The James Irvine Foundation as part of $4 million in grants to the Southern California region. Mainly Mozart received $325,000, Oceanside Museum of Art $300,000, and Orchestra Nova San Diego $275,000. The organizations selected for the Arts Regional Initiative are planning to use the grants to advance financial sustainability within a challenging economic environment and to increase cultural participation from underrepresented communities … Eight San Diego residents were recognized at the Molina Healthcare of California Community Champions Awards dinner. They each received a $1,000 grant to donate to an organization of their choice. “Molina Healthcare is proud to honor the San Diego champions who have gone above and beyond in their communities each day,” said Lisa Rubino, president of Molina Healthcare of California. “Their spirit of service, commitment and caring embodies the philosophy of our founder, Dr. C. David Molina, and we are privileged to recognize their contributions” … Promises2Kids received a $10,000 donation from Vons as they officially kicked off the Follow the Red Brick Road campaign aimed at raising funds for programs that help abused and neglected children throughout the county. Vons was the first recipient of commemorative bricks as part of the campaign. For each $1,000 donation, a red brick will be engraved and permanently placed in the entrance to Promises2Kids’ headquarters … Southwest Airlines employees partnered with the American Red Cross to provide comfort kits for people displaced by disasters across the nation. Southwest Airlines employees collected, assembled and distributed the kits to the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties on Oct. 8 … Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego Inc. received a $30,000 grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation to provide home-delivered meals to homebound, low-income seniors. The foundation is a private family foundation dedicated to enhancing the quality of people’s lives by supporting nonprofit organizations … The second annual Fork It Over for Kids with Sam the Cooking Guy was held Sept. 26 at The Salvation Army’s Ray and Joan Kroc Center. Contributing sponsors included Grossmont College culinary students, San Diego Desserts, Edible Arrangements and Wong’s Golden Palace. The event raised $30,000 for the Kroc Center Scholarship Fund. This fund provides assistance to low-

income individuals who are unable to pay to participate in the center’s programs … Stone Brewing Co. held its 13th annual Stone Anniversary Celebration & Invitational Beer Festival recently at Cal State San Marcos. The event raised $120,000 for local charities. Surfrider Foundation received $40,000; Boys & Girls Clubs of San Marcos $35,000; $25,000 went to the Palomar Family YMCA of Escondido; and Fight ALD received $20,000. Stone Brewing has raised $500,000 at its anniversary events … Cali Bamboo donated $8,000 to Reverb to provide Earth-friendly concert and event productions. “Reverb is such a unique group that’s dedicated to encouraging musicians and concert-goers to take action toward a more environmentally sustainable future,” said Tanner Haigwood, chief operating officer of Cali Bamboo … The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce is providing 200 members free registration to its Business After Five Mixers through a yearlong sponsorship from Qualcomm Inc. “Qualcomm’s generosity will help the chamber give our members a unique opportunity to connect with other San Diego businesses,” said Ruben Barrales, president and CEO of the chamber … Canyon Acres Children and Family Services held An Evening Under the Stars on Oct. 4. The $110,000 raised will benefit Canyon Acres and other children’s charities … Barney & Barney LLC donated $25,000 to Walden Family Services as part of its 100th anniversary celebration. “We are honored to support an organization that does so much to give foster youth a better start into adulthood,” said Hal Dunning, chief financial officer and principal at Barney & Barney … Lights Up! Playwrights Take the Stage is set for Nov. 7 at The Neurosciences Institute. The second annual Deborah Salzer Excellence in Arts Education Award will be presented to Courtney Flanagan, drama teacher at The Bishop’s School in La Jolla. Flanagan is being recognized for her use of the arts to positively impact the lives of students.
