Scripps Health's 39th annual Mercy Ball raised $1.7 million, including a $1.5 million gift facilitated by Kaye and Dick Woltman. The gift will fund a second da Vinci Surgical System for Scripps Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery Program at Scripps Mercy Hospital. The state-of-the-art technology will enable Scripps physicians to perform robot-assisted surgery to treat urologic, gynecologic and cardiac conditions. The Mercy Ball was held April 18 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego Patti Roscoe, founder of PRA Destination Management and founder and chairman of the Board of Advisors of San Diego State University's School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, has endowed a professorship in the school's new Institute for Meetings and Events. "From the very beginning of this journey, we worked hard to create a program that would inspire students to pursue their passion of service to our industry," said Roscoe. This is the first endowed faculty position to bear the name of a woman in the history of SDSU Legoland California donated $75,000 to the Carlsbad Educational Foundation's annual Kids Are Worth a Million telecast. Barnhart contributed $10,000, MovieMax Theater donated $7,200 and Life Technologies and Fidelity Investments each gave $5,000. Other donors were Gafcon, Trittipo Architecture and Planning and California Financial Services Downtown Breakfast Rotary is sponsoring the Barrio Logan College Institute Scholarship Luncheon. Bank of America contributed $15,000 for BLCI College Prep Programs and the Farrell Family Foundation gave $10,000 The San Diego County Bar Association honored Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo with a 2009 Service Award for Public Service by a Law Firm or Agency at its annual Awards Law Week Luncheon on April 29. The Center for Community Solutions nominated the firm for its dedication to the community and commitment to public service Jeannie Steeg, a professor of education at the San Diego campus of Chapman University College, recently renamed Brandman University, was named Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators for Region 18, covering San Diego and Imperial counties. Steeg was honored at an awards dinner April 29 KSDS Jazz 88.3 FM received a My Source Community Impact Award for Engagement from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The station was recognized for its music education initiatives in the community. The award is scheduled to be presented during the College Public Broadcasting luncheon July 8 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront The RB Rotary Club and Foundation purchased an alert and communication system for firefighters at Fire Station 33. This was designated as the highest priority improvement needed by the firefighters during renovation of the station Eric Northbrook received the 2009 Presidents' Community Service Award from the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors at the 2009 Spring World Convergence on May 1. Northbrook, an executive director with Cushman & Wakefield, is the founder of HeadNorth Foundation, which provides support and guidance to individuals and families affected by spinal cord injury. He was recognized for his outstanding stewardship in the community. Northbrook received a $5,000 donation to HeadNorth as part of the award Archi's Acres Veterans Sustainable Agriculture Training received the San Diego EarthWorks Environmental and Restoration That Helps award May 6 from City Councilwoman Donna Frye. VSAT offers combat veterans training and job placement in sustainable agriculture, coordinated with the Veterans Affairs San Diego Compensated Work Therapy Veterans Industries program Astrophysicist Frank Shu, a professor of physics at UC San Diego, received the 2009 Catherine Wolfe Bruce Gold Medal on May 1 for a lifetime of achievement in astronomy, according to the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Shu was recognized for his contributions to our understanding of how astronomical structures such as stars and spiral galaxies form.
