Site Tracks City Stimulus Funds

Mayor Jerry Sanders on May 6 unveiled a new Web site that permits residents to review allocations and make suggestions on how the city of San Diego should make best use of its share of $787 billion from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“We worked very hard to ensure that our region gained access to the stimulus program and we want everyone to know how these funds are being used,” said Sanders.

The Web site, at www.sandiego.gov/stimulus, provides only a glimpse into where federal dollars are allocated, and breaks the funding into seven categories: general infrastructure, transportation, housing, public safety, energy, water and miscellaneous.

For example, under general infrastructure, the site describes a dredging project for Mission Bay by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that received $10.5 million in stimulus money.

The site also has links to Web sites launched by the federal government and California to inform taxpayers about all the stimulus money. The city site also has a “contact us” feature that permits users to give local officials their ideas on how to spend the funds.
