Bulls, Bears and Beaches: Merrill Celebrates 60 Years in La Jolla

Merrill Lynch’s La Jolla office celebrates its 60th anniversary June 15.

The New York-based brokerage, now owned by Bank of America, opened the office June 15, 1949. Then the firm was called Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Beane, according to a publicist.

Today’s office of 50 employees handles wealth management, retirement planning, insurance and tax products in addition to the purchase and sale of stocks and bonds. Its manager is Tom Lawson, and its longest tenured employee is Cliff Huffman, who started there in 1973.

Congrats to Merrill, and the gang, particularly Huffman, whose longevity at one job is a rarity.

Merrill’s La Jolla office is one of eight it operates in the county, the largest being in downtown San Diego. All totaled the firm has 257 employees in the county.
