Doors Closed at Two Hard Rock Hotel Bars

Tarsadia Hotels, developer and manager of the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, has locked restaurateur and nightclub owner Rande Gerber and 150 of his employees out of the Sweetwater and Moonstone bars, two venues Gerber has operated since the hotel opened two years ago in the Gaslamp Quarter.

As a condominium hotel, individual investors own rooms at the Hard Rock.

Gerber, who operates clubs and restaurants in other hotels across the United States, including the Hard Rock Biloxi in Biloxi, Miss., said he was first notified of the matter early in the morning Jan. 29 when Tarsadia’s security personnel entered the clubs and told his cleaning crews to leave the hotel and subsequently changed the locks on the clubs’ doors.

Gerber said Jan. 30 that he received a faxed notice from Tarsadia following the lockout claiming that the hotel’s patrons and owners of the condos had complained to Tarsadia about employees of both clubs. But he also said he had not heard of any dissatisfaction on the part of Tarsaidia earlier.

Gerber, who heads the Gerber Group, with headquarters offices in New York and Malibu, said he has offered jobs to the 150 workers at his other establishments.

Newport Beach-based Tarsadia Hotels did not immediately return calls. But a Hard Rock San Diego Hotel executive forwarded a copy of a Tarsadia announcement that read: “After over six months of increasing condo owner, hotel guest and patron complaints of poor customer service, alleged acts of dishonesty, and verbal and physical abuse by members of the Gerber Group staff, Tarsadia Hotels terminated its agreement with Rande and Scott Gerber to manage and operate the Sweetwater Saloon and Moonstone Lounge venues at Hard Rock Hotel San Diego and has filed a lawsuit for damages arising from their wrongful conduct.”

Gerber said that he had no knowledge of any complaints filed with the San Diego Police Department.
