Fresh Start Surgical Gifts won in the nonprofit category and United Through Reading was named a finalist in the Better Business Bureau's annual Torch Awards, which honors organizations that demonstrate a commitment to ethical business practices Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad named Donna Anderson Youth of the Year and named Sonia Ramos runner up. The program recognizes superior leadership skills and academic achievement, and the winners received $1,000 and $500 scholarships funded by the Blackburn Foundation Leichtag Family Foundation awarded a $100,000 grant to Carlsbad High School broadcasting students, which helped expand the scope of "We Must Remember," a documentary film about Holocaust survivors. The Jewish Community Foundation, Leichtag and the Carlsbad Education Foundation partnered to fund the film, which made its debut at the San Diego Jewish Film Festival on Feb. 9 San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS 2009 has been scheduled for April 4 at NTC Park in Point Loma and April 26 at Legoland. The walks are expected to generate $1.5 million for MS research and services and programs for people with MS Home Start received $30,000 from the Price-Galinson Collaborative Fund, which will allow the nonprofit to expand the number of people served in its child abuse prevention and intervention programs Seven women will receive the 2009 Making a Difference for Women Award from Soroptimist International of San Diego. The award honors women who work to improve and significantly impact the lives of women and girls, and inspire and encourage other women The Grossmont College Foundation and Grossmont College awarded scholarships totaling $13,500 at its Spring Scholarship Awards Breakfast held Feb. 7. Recipients featured full-time students pursuing careers in health services, criminal justice and occupational therapy Mainly Mozart's Amadeus 2009 was held earlier this month at the Paradise Point Resort, with the Mandell Weiss Charitable Fund as one of the sponsors. Proceeds benefit the Mainly Mozart organization Elderhelp of San Diego's Essence of Life anniversary luncheon has been scheduled for Feb. 27 at Hilton San Diego Bay Front and will recognize 16 years of honorees in this awards program. Proceeds from the event will help seniors stay in their homes Feeding America San Diego received a $10,000 gift from Qualcomm to help launch a new Farm2Kids and BackPack Weekend Wellness programs. Both work with local schools to make food available to hungry children. "Not only will this donation help us fight childhood hunger, it also will help with the fight against childhood malnutrition," said Feeding America local CEO Gary McDonald.
