Despite Downturn, San Diego Ranks as a Labor Day Getaway

San Diego was No. 9 on a list of top 10 Labor Day weekend travel destinations ranked by the online travel agency Orbitz.com.

Not bad, considering it beat out Paris in 10th place, and didn’t even make the top 10 cut last year.

Las Vegas and New York City were first and second respectively, while Cancun, Mexico came in third. The ranking was based on air, hotel and travel packages booked by the agency as of Aug. 7 for travel from Friday, Sept. 4 through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

The Aug. 20 announcement also included average daily hotel rates, and San Diego’s interestingly was the highest at $195. Las Vegas was a relative bargain at $108, the lowest among the pack, followed by No. 4 ranked Honolulu with a rate of $111.

Joe Terzi, president and CEO of the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau, says travel on key holiday weekends has been strong throughout the summer.

How the lodging industry will fare this summer in comparison to last year remains to be seen. More leisure travelers are checking into hotels this summer, Terzi said, but there’s been a significant downturn in group occupancy. Group occupancy refers to those who travel for meetings and events.
