The San Diego State University Alumni Association honored graduates for outstanding work at its annual Montys Awards Gala held April 11 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. The Distinguished Alumni Service Award went to Bill Trumpfheller, president of public relations firm Nuffer, Smith, Tucker. The Distinguished University Service Award went to Joyce M. Gattas, dean of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts The San Diego Chamber Orchestra celebrated its 25th season March 28 at a gala at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa. Sponsors included Morgan Stanley, Irving Hughes, Torrey Pines Bank, ProFlowers and California Bank & Trust The Milagros Unit of Rady Children's Hospital Auxiliary is hosting its 49th Food & Wine Tasting on June 7 at the Del Mar Plaza. The unit is an all-volunteer, Spanish-speaking women's organization supporting children PCL Construction Services donated canned goods to Angel's Depot during its recent Soup and Beans Contest to see who could provide the most cans of donated food. The total was 1,867 cans, which will be used to support the Senior Food-for-a-Week program of the agency Sally Hall is the recipient of the San Diego Pride 2009 Spirit of Stonewall Community Service Award. The award recognizes up-and-coming leaders within the LGBT community and those who have made substantial contributions Ronald McDonald House of San Diego awarded $43,500 to five winners of the second early drawing of the Dream House Raffle fundraiser. The winners are eligible for the final early bird drawing, as well as the grand prize, a $1.9 million Encinitas home. Proceeds will help Ronald McDonald House provide a home away from home to families of sick children Two brand redesigns by MiresBall, a San Diego design firm, were named among the world's most effective in the annual ReBrand 100 Global Awards. CND, a leader in the professional nail, hand and foot care industry, and Lux Art Institute, an artist-in-residence museum in Encinitas, were recognized Grossmont Hospital Foundation planned to host its 25th anniversary Invitational Golf Tournament at Sycuan Resort on April 16. Title sponsors were Edco Disposal and Grossmont Healthcare District. The funds raised will support patient services and programs at Sharp Grossmont Hospital The Jewish Community Foundation has recommended grants of $52 million since July. The foundation's recent grants included critical crisis needs; programs for the young and elderly; services for victims of domestic violence; education; and the arts. Two important grants were awarded to On the Go Senior Transportation, which totaled $2.2 million for three years, and $825,000 for food programs, including a San Diego Food Bank program Outback Steakhouse Managing Partner Mark Peterson of San Diego and 11 other employees joined the Ride Ataxia 3 Cycling Team in Portland, Ore., to raise $87,000 to benefit Friedreich's Ataxia research. The third annual ride raised $220,000. Mark DeBoskey, station manager of KSDS Jazz 88, was awarded the 2009 Jazz Educator of the Year award by the California Association of Music Education. DeBoskey was recognized for his leadership in providing support for San Diego City College to a jazz festival held at the college campus Newland Communities, developer of 4S Ranch, presented $10,000 to HomeAid San Diego on March 20 at Casa de Amparo's Child Development Center in Oceanside. The highlight of the check presentation was a Newland/HomeAid-hosted Spring Celebration party for the children of Casa de Amparo, complete with an Easter egg hunt, games, food and prizes.
