Willis Allen Point Loma joined forces with Mothers and Daughters Club Assisting Philanthropies, or Madcaps, and sponsored United We Give, the 49th annual musical review at Correia Junior High School in Point Loma. The $40,000 raised will be distributed to several charitable organizations that Madcaps supports Developmental Services Continuum received a $6,500 grant from Las Patronas to fund the upgrade of DSC's phone system. The facility will increase access to primary care services for the city's under-served Latino residents The Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center honored Gene and Hannah Step at the Heart of San Diego Gala on March 21. The Steps' philanthropy has helped support many programs within UC San Diego, including a new cardiovascular center. Sponsors included DPR Construction, Viejas Enterprises, Eli Lilly and the Dr. Seuss Fund at the San Diego Foundation On March 31, the city and county of San Diego recognized Ralph Bryan for his service to the La Jolla Playhouse as board chairman for the past three years. He helped the theater complete its seven-year, $40 million capital campaign and established the Inner Circle Program for donors Thomas Shannon Jr. was presented the Horatio Alger Award in Washington, D.C., on April 3. He's one of 10 individuals and the only San Diegan to be inducted as a lifetime member into the Horatio Alger Association. Shannon is recognized for overcoming his humble beginnings to serve as an outstanding role model to the national community Computers 2 SD Kids is providing 100 computers to Kipp Adelante Preparatory Academy, and an additional 200 systems are going to families in the county Mission Federal Credit Union received a first place Diamond Award from the Credit Union National Association in recognition of its community initiative titled "I'm Thankful for My Teacher." The awards recognize the best in credit union marketing, advertising and business development Souplantation donated 3,000 pounds of albondigas soup to St. Vincent de Paul Village. The soup, the most popular at Souplantation, will feed more than 3,600 people and is valued at $4,500 Rayna Aylward, executive director of the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation, received the Kids Included Together Founders Award on March 20. The award was presented at the annual KIT National Conference. Aylward is only the second person who has been recognized with this award The San Diego Rescue Mission served an Easter meal to more than 1,000 homeless April 4. Volunteers assisted with the hot meals, toiletries and toys The Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego is sponsoring the 5KWalk & Fun Run on April 18 on the NTC Promenade at Liberty Station. Half the proceeds will support services for local families, while the balance goes to fund medical research seeking more effective treatments and a cure for the disease.
