Waterfront Fixture Celebrates 70 Years

One of San Diego’s oldest waterfront businesses, R.E. Staite Engineering, turned 70 years old this week, the company said Nov. 17.

Beginning with the construction of wharves and docks for the city’s shipbuilders and tuna canneries, R.E. Staite also played a big role in the development of Navy and San Diego Unified Port District facilities all around San Diego Bay, the firm said.

Noteworthy projects included the construction of wharves for the aircraft carriers USS Ronald Reagan and USS John C. Stennis at Naval Air Station North Island, the dredging of the National City marine basin, and the installation of pilings and foundations for the San Diego Convention Center.

R.E. Staite, which is owned by Ray Carpenter, has also worked on projects from Alaska to Panama, and was a key player for three years on a landmark environmental cleanup project involving spilled oil from the Exxon Valdez in Prince William Sound, Alaska.

More recently the company has been working on a water transportation center next to the convention center.

R.E. Staite has about $30 million in work under contract today, about the same amount as last year, said Tim Kelley, vice president. It has about 80 employees.
