Voices for Children's Starry, Starry Night was held Sept. 20 at the home of Joan Waitt, honorary chair for the event. "The need among foster children is so very great and the work by Voices for Children is amazing," said Waitt. The $525,000 raised was a record high with major sponsors, including Qualcomm, Irving Hughes, Clare Webber, Pamplemousse Grille and Elaine and Tom Murphy, contributing greatly to the success of the event San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine received a $1.5 million gift from Dan McKinney to establish an endowed fellowship for palliative medicine. The gift was made in honor of Vi McKinney's 90th birthday and will support prevention and relief for patients living with advanced or life-limiting illnesses Clark Builders Group, Clark Realty Capital, and Clark Construction hosted a charity golf tournament on Oct. 16 at the Maderas Golf Club. The $240,000 raised will provide grants to local chapters of StandUp for Kids and the ACE Mentor Program. Clark Cares also donated to Birdies for the Brave and the Good Guys of Morgan Run, whose programs support servicemen and women injured in the line of duty On Oct. 14, the Rincon Tribal Council presented a $50,000 check to The Angel's Depot, part of a $150,000 commitment during the next three years. The contribution matches the renewed Harrah's Foundation commitment made earlier this year. Their contributions support emergency meal boxes for the elderly poor Bill Navrides, senior development officer at the Sharp Hospice Care/Grossmont Hospital Foundation, won a Pillar award at a recent Sharp all-staff assembly. Navrides was recognized for increasing net revenue from special event fundraising an average of 300 percent since 2005 International Christian charity Floresta raised $258,000 at its annual auction held Oct. 4. Floresta helps the environment by planting millions of trees, training farmers and providing seed money for small businesses Center for Community Solutions held its fourth annual Chef Showdown: Taking a Stand Against Domestic Violence fundraiser Oct. 2 at the NTC Promenade. The $75,000 raised will support CCS's domestic violence and sexual assault prevention programs. The sponsors were led by Viejas Casino and Kashi ... The 13th annual Bruce Gorder UC San Diego 5K Walk for Melanoma was held Oct. 11. The $91,000 raised includes a $25,000 pledged match from Charles Gorder, who founded the event in honor of his son Bruce. The event's title sponsor was Fish Market Restaurants The San Diego Community College District will receive an $86,000 grant to partner with a Wal-Mart Stores work force initiative. Dr. Constance Carroll, SDCCD chancellor, said the "initiative will strengthen our efforts to develop new career training opportunities in green technology" Roger Roberts of Prudential California Realty's La Mesa office received the community volunteer award from the San Diego Association of Realtors. Roberts was recognized for his work as the president of the board of trustees for St. Madeleine Sophie's Center The annual Aerotek & Freedom Alliance Charity and Networking Golf Tournament raised $20,000 to benefit the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund, which gives scholarships to the children of military personnel who are disabled or killed on active duty The National Hispanic Media Coalition honored Phyllis Schwartz on Oct. 24 at a regional VIP reception. Schwartz, executive vice president of news, promotion and original content for the NBC local media unit, was recognized with a president's award for her service to the Latino community Pacific Ridge School said contributions to its educational assistance fund totaled $1 million. The fund ensures that talented students have the opportunity to attend the school Wal-Mart Stores associates presented teachers and students at Lafayette Elementary School with a $3,500 donation, which included plants, donation and $500 gift certificate for a new computer.
