Voters Pass Judgment on Marine Terminal Plan, Sales Taxes

A ballot measure that would have opened the door to commercial development at San Diego’s Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal went down to defeat Nov. 4.

Some 70 percent of voters rejected the plan, according to results released by the county registrar of voters early Nov. 5.

Measure backers proposed building a deck above the shipping terminal, saying the space would be suitable for hotels, restaurants, shops and even a football stadium. Voters who live in the five cities abutting the San Diego Unified Port District , San Diego, Coronado, National City, Chula Vista and Imperial Beach , were eligible to vote on the matter.

In other local elections:

– San Diego residents chose Jan Goldsmith to be city attorney. Goldsmith took 59.5 percent of the vote, beating incumbent City Attorney Michael Aguirre.

– El Cajon residents approved Proposition J, a half-cent sales tax increase to fund general city services. The measure passed with 51 percent of the vote.

– La Mesa residents approved Proposition L, a three-quarter-cent sales tax increase to fund general city services. Fifty-five percent of voters said yes to the measure.

– National City residents approved Proposition M, repealing a 1 cent sales tax hike approved in 2006. Some 57 percent of voters called for the sales tax to be repealed.

Election results were current as of 6 a.m. on Nov. 5. At the time, the registrar of voters had to count 220,000 absentee and provisional ballots.
