Borrego Solar Sales Triple, Opens Offices in California, Boston

After 25 years of installing solar power systems on the West Coast, Borrego Solar has expanded by opening an office in Chelmsford, Mass.

The El Cajon-based company signed its largest contract to date for a project called Boston Community Capital and said it is working to build up a presence countrywide, said Aaron Hall, chief executive officer. Financial terms of the contract were not available.

Borrego reported $30 million in revenue last year and $12 million in 2006; Hall expects revenue to grow 100 percent in 2008.

The company has 135 employees and plans to add 40 within the next 12 months.

The company also opened offices in Petaluma and Santa Ana this year. The Boston area office opened in August 2007. Other locations include Berkeley and Campbell, in Silicon Valley.

While Borrego Solar is growing “across the board,” according to Hall, the focus in the type of projects and their locations has shifted. In 2007, half of revenues came from commercial installations.

The Boston Community Capital project includes seven affordable housing projects; the company recently signed up another affordable housing project in San Ysidro.

Water Rates to Increase Next Year:

San Diego residents can expect to see higher water rates in the next year after the Metropolitan Water District approved a $2 billion spending plan.

The San Diego County Water Authority is one of the district’s 26 member agencies.

The rate of wholesale water increased by 10 percent to cover the loss of 30 percent of water from Northern California, according to the Los Angeles-based Metropolitan Water District.

The average household locally will pay $1.50 more a month, depending on the agency that supplies the water; rates will be effective Jan. 1.

The district recently approved 20 construction projects, including two pipelines that serve San Diego and Riverside counties.
