County’s Hotels Learn Dynalectric Will Leave the Light on for Them

With the recent completion of five projects in San Diego County, Dynalectric Co. says it has now wired more than 5,000 local hotel rooms.

In the last 18 months, the company has completed electrical work on The Grand Del Mar, Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina, Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa on Mission Bay, and San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina.

And in December, Dynalectric expects to complete electrical work, including fire alarm, audiovisual and air-conditioning controls, for the new Hilton San Diego Bayfront, says Executive Vice President Channey Doud.

Dynalectric is a unit of Emcor Group Inc., a Connecticut-based Fortune 500 company with $5.9 billion in annual revenues.

Dynalectric provides new construction and renovation services on office buildings, hotels, residential complexes, manufacturing plants and military installations.

“We’re pretty diverse,” said Phil Petersen, president and chief executive officer of Dynalectric San Diego. “We do a lot of the low-voltage systems in addition to basic electric work.”

General contractors often bring in Dynalectric up to a year before a job starts to assist through the design process, Petersen says.

Saving Time, Money

Jeff Hall, president and CEO of Manchester Construction, the general contractor of the $270 million, 249-room Grand Del Mar, says Dynalectric’s services lead to more efficient designs that save money and reduce construction time.

“All the designs are buildable, but some are cheaper because of the efficiency in which they go together,” Hall said. “That’s extremely important, especially in the market we’re in. Because of the slowdown in construction, projects need to find a way to be as economical as possible.”

Dynalectric earned $90 million in revenues in 2007, but expects to be off about 10 percent this year because of the slowdown in the industry, says Petersen.

The company has 400 employees today, down from about 450 at the end of 2007.

“We had a self-imposed reduction because of all the work in the last two years,” Petersen said. “We finished all those big jobs. We slowed down after that. We had to.”

Other large projects completed last year include downtown high-rises: the City Mark condos and DiamondView Tower. The company has completed several office projects, including Sunroad Centrum I, Copley Point and Summit Rancho Bernardo.

Dynalectric, founded in 1970, is completing two power plants in Imperial Valley, a 100-megawatt facility in El Centro and 17-megawatt biomass plant that burns wood, says Petersen.

Looking Ahead

“I think we’re fairly tight. I call it back to normal. The 10-year boom of San Diego has kind of slowed down,” he said. “But it looks promising for 2010.”

Upcoming jobs include a student housing project and a new cardiovascular center at Thornton Hospital, both at UC San Diego, he says.

And the company is trying to secure a $3 million contract to wire the Escondido Marriott, as well as other large projects in the planning stages such as the downtown Marriott and a number of housing projects for the military.

Manchester Construction also is working with Dynalectric on renovations of the five-star Raffles L’Ermitage Beverly Hills hotel.

“They are a great group of guys,” said Hall. “Phil Petersen and Channey Doud they do a great job. They’re a very classy outfit.”
