Dermacare Laser & Skin Care Clinics will open its second San Diego franchise location next year, the Scotts & #173;dale, Ariz.-based company announced Sept. 24.

Dr. Jeff Birchall and Dr. Brent Greenberg, who introduced Dermacare to the San Diego market in August 2006 with the opening of their Rancho Bernardo franchise, will launch a new franchise in Rancho Santa Fe or coastal North County.

"We were looking at the demographics of the people who use our services," Birchall said. "And it's personal preference."

Dermacare is a physician-based medical skin care franchise business with locations in the United States and internationally. It was founded in 2001 and has treated more than 10,000 patients, according to its Web site.

Dermacare franchises are usually profitable within six months of operating, something that Birchall said was true of the Rancho Bernardo franchise, although he declined to give revenues. The overall investment costs come to $500,000, according to its Web site.

The clinic will offer the same skin care services and products like Fraxel Laser procedure, used to reduce acne scars, age and brown spots, and wrinkles, and Botox Cosmetic being offered at the Rancho Bernardo franchise.

It will also be the same size , the Rancho Bernardo clinic is about 2,000 square feet and has four treatment rooms , and will treat the same amount of clients , about 2,000 people are treated annually at the Rancho Bernardo franchise.

Birchall and Greenberg plan to open a third franchise in the San Diego region in the next 12 to 24 months, according to Birchall.

Alvarado Hospital Receives State Grant: A $338,400 grant to be used for job training was awarded to Alvarado Hospital in August by the California Employment Training Panel, according to hospital officials.

The ETP awards grants for job training to all sectors, although Alvarado Hospital was the only local hospital to receive a grant. On Aug. 24, ETP said that it was awarding 22 contracts and $5.5 million in job-training funding, according to its Web site.

Funds ranged from the $1 million received by Yahoo! statewide to the $17,000 received by Brys Architectural Metal and Glass in Sacramento.

At Alvarado Hospital, the grant will be used for job training for the 300 nurses that the 306-bed, acute-care hospital has on staff.

"It offers us leverage, and the freedom to add to what we already had in the curriculum," said Greg Harrison, vice president of marketing and public relations at Alvarado Hospital.

The classes will focus on clinical skills and patient safety modules, although there will be time management and computer skills courses, according to Harrison. The training has already started.

The funds also will be used to reduce or relieve the cost of required courses like CPR certification, he added.

In addition, one-on-one clinical training will be made available to 20 recent nursing graduates. Alvarado Hospital was the only local hospital to receive the grant. The priorities for the grant money were established by the nursing staff, according to Harrison.

Sharp Rees-Stealy Opens New Facility: Sharp Rees-Stealy opened its 16th location on Genesee Avenue in San Diego within walking distance of Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus.

Family medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine and general surgery will be relocated to the new medical center, which will also include a laboratory, occupational medicine, radiology and administrative offices.

Sharp Rees-Stealy is a multi-specialty medical group and is part of San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare.

"We consolidated a lot of the smaller physician offices into one location," said Donna Mills, chief executive officer of Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Centers. "We're expecting the patient population in this area to grow. It's important to have room for growth in this area."

The three-story, 40,000-square-foot facility houses 17 providers and was renovated, although Mills declined to give the cost. It opened in August.

In February 2008, Sharp Rees-Stealy is scheduled to open a Scripps Ranch location. The 41,000-square-foot building will house a full range of primary and specialty care offices, according to Mills. It also has North County locations in Rancho Bernardo, Mira Mesa, Carmel Valley and Del Mar.

Sharp Rees-Stealy was recently recognized as the top performing physician group in California by Blue Cross of California's 2006 HMO Quality Scorecard program, according to Angela Iwansky, marketing specialist for Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Centers.
