Bulls and Bears Go to the Dogs on Christmas Eve

Rancho Santa Fe-based Helen Woodward Animal Center President Mike Arms will ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Dec. 24 to promote a program for adopting orphaned pets.

The program, called Home 4 the Holidays, is in its ninth year and is sponsored by Iams Pet Foods. This year the program should find homes for about 410,000 pets, and should surpass a total of 2 million orphaned pets that have found homes since the program began, the center said.

The program is also coordinated among 2,750 animal shelters and pet rescue groups in 14 countries, who are working “hand in paw” to increase pet adoptions and lower the rate of euthanasia for orphaned animals worldwide, said Arms.

Arms will take seven orphaned puppies to NYSE in hopes of finding them homes.

“In December, the NYSE focuses on holiday sales and winter oil prices,” he said. “This Christmas Eve Wall Street will focus on life, the real reason for the season.”

Opened in 1972, the Helen Woodward Animal Center provides services to about 10,000 animals a year, has 130 employees and a budget of $6.5 million.
