The Wachovia Foundation contributed $5 million to UC San Diego's Rady School of Management to support the construction of the second phase of the Rady School campus and establishes the foundation as a founder-level donor for the school. This designation is for donors at the $5 million level.

The California Endowment has committed $750,000 to provide wildfire relief and aid to nonprofit organizations and clinics providing health and supportive services to low-income children and families. The relief funding will be directed to organizations in San Diego and other Southern California communities.

The 78th Annual Candlelight Ball benefiting Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla was held Dec. 1 at the Del Mar Country Club. General Chairwoman Betty Knight Scripps is contributing a $1.5 million challenge grant to encourage others to give to Scripps La Jolla.

Local commercial real estate broker Irving Hughes Inc. donated $100,000 to The Old Globe to fund the acquisition of a new building in southeastern San Diego which will be developed into the theater's Technical Center. The property will house the Globe's scene shop and warehouse.

A $100,000 matching gift was pledged to support UC San Diego's series of public talks on religion and society. The gift, to the Eugene M. Burke C. S. P. Lectureship program, will help fund the lecture series. An equal amount must be raised by the end of December 2008.

Makua, the fund raising auxiliary for Voices for Children, held its annual fund-raising event "Makua Royale 007" at Lindbergh Field. The event raised $132,000, a record for the group's 53-year history.

The City Ballet's 13th Annual Gala was held on Nov. 10 at Paradise Point Resort. The $55,000 raised will support the educational programs that ballet brings into the public schools. Major sponsors included Tommy Bahama Rum, Pressnet Express Inc., Creative Nail Design Inc., Wente Vineyards and Quantum Productions Inc.

The National Organization on Disability and its sponsor, Prudential, presented a $2,000 prize to Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad and its physical and learning support program. The award recognizes and promotes exemplary projects and demonstrates innovative programs for people with disabilities.

Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps LLP and CommNexus San Diego have donated $2,500 each to support injured U.S. Marines. The contribution goes to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.

The Sullivan Children's Foundation held its third annual charity night Nov. 10. Due to the damage suffered at San Pasqual Academy in Escondido, the board voted to once again designate all proceeds to SPA. To date, $15,000 has been raised which will help SPA begin to rebuild and repair some of the damage.

The San Diego chapter of the Huntington's Disease Society of America held its annual Celebration of Hope Gala on Nov. 9 at the El Cortez, which was presented by Cricket Communication. Other sponsors included Viejas Enterprises, the San Diego Chargers, Union Bank of California, Sempra Energy and Point Loma Community Bank. The $116,000 raised will directly benefit the HDSA Center of Excellence for Family Services and Research at UC San Diego and other HDSA programs.

The CW Cares for Kids Fund donated $10,000 to Family Health Centers of San Diego for its KidCare Express Mobile Medical Unit program. This grant will help fund routine physicals, immunizations and illness care for uninsured children throughout the San Diego community. The CW Cares for Kids, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation, was established to improve the lives of children and families in San Diego County by supporting local children's charities.
